Libby Robinson and Young Rotary’s past president Irene Dowsett - who are both Paul Harris Fellows - were honoured for their services to the Rotary Foundation (Rotary’s charity).
A Paul Harris Fellow is the Rotary Foundation’s way of expressing its appreciation for a substantial contribution to its humanitarian and educational programs.
It is named after their founder Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.
Libby was awarded for her service and support of the Foundation and Irene for her work for Polio Plus.
The Young Rotary Club held a farewell dinner for Irene who has moved to Queensland.
Irene was a Rotarian for several years in Brisbane and a member of the Young Rotary Club for 19 years.
She was club president in 2013-2014.
The club presented Irene with a sapphire pin, a highly regarded award in Rotary.
She was also made an honorary member of the Young club.
On the same evening, the local club remembered the disaster victims of Cyclone Pam and the devastation in Vanuatu.
Young Rotary Club has an affiliation with Tanna Island, Vanuatu.
In 2006 a volunteer team from Young spent several weeks completing refurbishment of the ladies ward at the Lenakel Hospital.
The generous club members raised $7000 to buy seven shelter boxes.
If you would like to donate to help buy a shelter box, please call the club’s treasurer Sue Gordon on 6382 1113.
