Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said there were 34 projects funded in Hume under the government’s Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program – the largest number of approved applications for a federal electorate in Australia.
The following projects have been allocated funding in the Young shire:
· $8000 toward the construction of a First World War memorial at Murringo coordinated by the Young RSL Sub-Branch
· $544 toward the public launch and display of photos taken by Eric Roake Dowling, a soldier in the Great War hosted by the Young Historical Society
· $1500 toward the First World War commemorative exhibition hosted by the Bribbaree RSL Sub-Branch
“We had such an outstanding response from local communities and have consequently been able to fund an enormous range of projects and moving tributes planned for this centenary year,” Mr Taylor said.
He said one of the standout events in Hume would be the Kangaroo March Centenary Re-Enactment, which had received $13,319 in funding toward a re-enactment march planned for September/October this year.
The Kangaroo March will follow the original recruitment route in 1915 through towns including Cootamundra, Wallendbeen, Harden, Galong, Binalong, Yass, Jerrawa, Gunning, Cullerin, Goulburn, Marulan, Tallong, Wingello, Bundanoon, Exeter, Moss Vale, Mittagong, Colo Vale, Hill Top and Thirlmere.
Mr Taylor encouraged everyone to take time to support these local events and commemorations to mark the historic occasion of the Anzac Centenary.
Young and District Family History groupwould like to invite the public to come and view their display of profiles of service men and women from World War One and help us remember those who gave so much.
The exhibition has been set up at the Young Town Hall and will be open for viewing Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm.
It closes Friday, April 24.
Members from the group will be attending the town hall from 10am to 12 noon on Tuesday, April 21 for local people who would like to chat or are seeking help with their own World War One research.
Bribbaree RSL sub-branch is in the process of establishing a memorabilia collection of military history in the Bribbaree Memorial Hall from the involvement of local residents both now and in the past.
Items can include medals, uniforms, photos, newspaper clippings - the list is endless.
The items can be donated or simply provided on loan for exhibition.
The Bribbaree RSL sub-branch has obtained a Federal grant for safe storage and exhibition of these items.
