Having lost the old kitchen to a devastating pavilion fire in early November 2014, the Young Show Society has just been awarded a 2015 Royal Agricultural Society of NSW (RAS) Foundation Community Kitchen Grant, courtesy of Masters Home Improvement.
Young and Bingara show societies were selected from 90 applicants for the grant, worth over $30,000.
The Community Kitchen Grant supports local organisations wishing to improve their kitchen in an existing community facility for the broader benefit of their local community.
RAS Foundation Executive Officer, Kate Ross, said the standard and range of projects this year was very impressive, giving the judges a challenging task.
However, it was the applications submitted by Pat Fletcher on behalf of the Young Show Society, and Robyn Phillips on behalf of Bingara Show Society, that caught the judging panel’s eye.
“The Young Showground recently had a pavilion destroyed by arson, and in the fire they lost the kitchen they had fundraised for many years to put in. The community was devastated by the loss of this important community asset,” Ms Ross said.
“Similarly, the Bingara community has also faced recent hardships, enduring one of the worst droughts in more than 50 years.
“In country areas, the showground is often the focal point of the region and is vital for attracting events and visitors. Bingara was operating with 50-year-old facilities which were considerably out-dated and unable to meet the standards or needs of the community.
“The Community Kitchen will make a huge difference to both of these regional communities – it will breathe new life into their important showground facilities, ensuring they can be used as multipurpose buildings year round by a number of sporting and community organisations.
“The kitchen that each community will receive was constructed at the Sydney Royal Easter Show and used for cooking demonstrations throughout the Show.
“These wonderful, well-appointed modern kitchens will become the heart of both the Young and Bingara communities."
