With total prizemoney in excess of $6000 per race, the competition is again expected to be of the highest standard.
The first race of the night is a three-year-old fillies race over 1720 metres and a capacity field will face the starter.
Recent form suggests that the Shaun Snudden-trained Perfect Paradise to be driven by Corey Bell has strongest claims over Lorna Ella and the Murringo-trained Cherry Express with Tanya’s Past best of the others.
Perfect Paradise was a winner of two races in succession at Wagga and Albury in early March, one of those wins being over a similar distance to tonight’s race rating 2:00.5.
Following those wins, the Modern Art filly ran fourth at Wagga on March 27 and April 5.
The Ray Walker-trained Lorna Ella also ran fourth at Wagga last time out, her last win was at Young on August 1 last year over this distance rating 2:01.6.
Garth Hoy has Cherry Express racing consistently, with her last win at Canberra in January when she defeated Mustang Jet and Promise Approved rating 2:03.1.
The second race of the night is again for three-year-olds - colts and geldings - over a similar distance and here the selection is for Gentleman Red from the Steve Turnbull stable to defeat Ideal One, Jethro’s An Eagle and first starter Star Writer, also from the Steve Turnbull stable at Bathurst.
Gentleman Red ran a close third at Bathurst last start with the winner of that race, Hez A Dude, rating a smart 1:56.4 and that form would suggest Gentleman Red has the ability to win this race.
Pole marker Ideal One has won here back in June 2014 and with only 10 lifetime starts, this could be his chance to bounce back.
Jethro’s An Eagle is well-bred being by Real Desire from La Saint and is trained by Wendy Turnbull.
Already a winner of two races from 16 starts, his second at Bathurst last week was sufficient to put him in the market while Star Writer is a first starter by Sportwriter and will have to be taken on face value.
Race three stretches out to the 2100 metre distance which will suit Jack Kelly for Shaun Snudden and Corey Bell.
Already a winner of four races, his last at West Wyalong on April 12, the six-year-old gelding looks well placed here and should be too strong for Smiling Cullen who has won his last two starts for Steve Turnbull.
Those two wins at West Wyalong were on a much tighter track and his second at Cowra prior was a good effort with the winner of that race rating 1:59.4.
Nathan Turnbull will take the drive on Blessedbythebest who won at Dubbo prior to being placed third on two occasions at Bathurst recently.
Of the other runners, Usher is overdue for a win since winning here in July last year rating 1:59.5 for the 1720 metre journey.
Special handicap conditions in race four have brought together a very good field, the Peter Bullock-trained Signory Shannon looking the winner from Chloes Venture, Upsy Daisy and We Own The Night.
Murray Sullivan will take the drive on Signory Shannon. His drive on the Bettors Delight gelding at Dubbo when defeating The Kissing Bandit was enough to retain the drive at Cowra but was unfortunately caught three wide early and forced to sit outside the leader and finished second.
The Grenfell-trained Chloe’s Venture won at Canberra in February and has since raced consistently having placed at Wagga and Dubbo and certainly gets her chance here for Mark Hewitt.
Others with claims, Upsy Daisy and We Own The Knight have both been racing well with We Own The Knight winning at Bathurst rating 1:59.2 on March 25.
Race five will cater for the two-year-olds and, again, a very good field will face the starter over the 1720 metre journey.
Looking at form on a similar tracks to Young and not on the much bigger track at Bathurst, Pure Cam has good form being placed second at Wagga on two occasions in smart times.
Jessica Amber is a last start Wagga winner rating 2:01.9 while the polemarker Major Sunset was placed at Canberra after coming out of gate six.
With that in mind, the Rachael and David Micallef-owned-and- bred Aces And Sevens filly Crusty has caught the eye of many keen judges and believe she will win the race following two good runs at Bathurst where she finished second and third respectively.
Trained at Bathurst by Steve Turnbull, the daughter of the good race mare Christy looks to have a bright future with this race tonight being a real test of her ability.
Race six is one of the harder races of the night with what appears to be 10 runners of similar ability facing the starter. Looking Down the List, Don’t Tell Errol has form that includes two seconds at Dubbo and a third at Parkes from his last four starts and, although drawn on the second line, could be coming home hard in this.
The Flightpath gelding has not won since Parkes in May last year but has been placed eight times in his career for Oberon trainer Geoff Lawson.
Mikaela’s Delight spoilt her chances at Bankstown last start when she broke early then sat three wide. Her form prior to that was excellent and she is resuming here but must be considered.
Old Jack Cambo had no luck last time out at Bathurst, prior to that was third on two occasions on the same track and may improve.
An interesting runner is Gina Gina who is resuming from a spell.
Having only four starts for trainer Rick Burnett, the Christian Cullen filly showed improvement at each appearance including a second at Parkes and a second at Young in early December, certainly one to watch.
The second last of the night, race seven is another race with special handicap conditions with the main chances being Owen John for Ray Turner, Flying Pirate, Tenofus for Shaun Snudden and Perfect Sign for local trainer Troy Fletcher.
Owen John won at Wagga in January and has been placed at Wagga and West Wyalong and gets his chance here while he is yet to win a race but could surprise with Tenofus winning at Wagga on February 3 recording a 2:02.2 mile rate.
The lucky last, race eight is an Encouragement Stakes and here the selections are Flight To Vagas who last won a race at Young on July 12, 2013, Coopers Beach Boy who is to win a race from 31 starts but has 12 minor placings, Swoop Like A Magpie who ran third at Dubbo in a slowly run race and King Caractacus who is a winner of three races over a twenty six start racing career.
A competitive night of racing with free admission and the popular Lions club barbeque combined with TAB coverage should ensure another successful night for the Young Harness Racing club.
