As the title suggests, it is certainly no tourist flick and the black comedy horror offering is not for the faint of heart!
Millerd, who managed the local cinema before leaving to pursue his dream of filmmaking full-time, will be in town for the one-night only event, answering questions about the movie as well as discussing some of his future projects - one of which is touted to be shot in Young.
At present, all his efforts are still firmly geared towards spreading the Pilliga brand with Young - one of the last stops on a lengthy list of venues the film has been showcased at across the country since November last year.
“So far we have played the film at 27 locations with between 40 and 50 screenings,” said Millerd.
“It has been a full-time gig for me since I left YDAC in September 2014 and shows no signs of slowing with the pending worldwide release of the film slated for July this year.
“It has been a very busy but exciting time that has included a trip to the US where we have gained worldwide distribution and done more kilometres than the Leyland Brothers!”
There’s Something In The Pilliga has taken nine years to complete and is a found footage, black comedy horror film rated MA15+.
Millerd concedes it is not for everyone with the target demographic being people between 16-40years.
While the film was inspired by horror classics such as Wake In Fright, Deliverance, Razorback, Blair Witch Project and Wolf Creek, Millerd said the real tales of ordinary Australians who live and travel through the Pilliga was the main reason behind the creation and success of the film.
“Everyone has heard of the spooky stories in the Pilliga especially about the Yowie,” said Millerd.
“The legends are among the most widely known throughout Australia and the world.
“These tales have inspired songs from the likes of the late Slim Dusty among many others and anyone who knows anything about the vast wilderness, from bleary-eyed truckies to carpooling backpackers knows not to stop there!”
The film is loosely based on a story relayed to Millerd by his cousin Tracy Gaynor, who along with a female friend, went on a late night car trip with two men they met at a pub to the cockroach corners of the Pilliga scrub to spend the night at an old hut with a hermit friend of the men.
While Tracy’s story had a happy ending, Millerd was a lot more coy about the conclusion of his film and not prepared to spoil the ending for those who have yet to see it.
“Let’s just that it’s not a doco on CSG!” Millerd laughed.
“Some people find it hard to believe anyone would hop in a car with strange men and go anywhere but people do it in Sydney every weekend without batting an eyelid.
“The difference here is they are surrounded by bush and not skyscrapers.”
After all this time in the expanses of the Pilliga Forest that included 16 days of shooting and over two months of camping, does Millerd believe in any of the legends such as that of the Pilliga Yowie?
“Whenever I get asked about the existence of the Pilliga Yowie I can’t help but think of a Carl Sagan quote I once heard - “Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence”.
“Just because we haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it isn’t there - after all, we all thought the earth was flat once and we still discover new species every year in our remote forests and in our great oceans,” he said.
“As the tagline says - not all that wanders is lost!”
There’s Something In The Pilliga is playing at Southern Cross Cinema in Young on Thursday April 23 at 7pm. Cost is $10 per person and tickets can be bought at the cinema on 6382 1000. The night includes a Q&A and a lucky door prize will be drawn on the night. The film is strictly MA15+ and contains strong sex scenes, nudity, occasional course language and violent themes.
