Mrs Margaret Hislop (ne McDermott) of Mt St Joseph's Nursing Home celebrated her 100th birthday among family and friends on Friday, April 24.

Family members travelled from as far away as WA, the South Coast and everywhere in between to celebrate the special day. Among those who attended were four of Mrs Hislop’s children, as well as grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren.

A special visitor - Father Joseph Maxwell - also attended the celebrations. He has known Mrs Hislop his entire life.

“She is a woman of great character who always put herself out for others and was very socially conscious in offering help,” he said.

“And she is a great mother - that was a characteristic of the McDermotts.”

Mrs Hislop was born at Liverpool on April 24, 1915. 

She was the youngest of nine children - seven brothers and two sisters.

Mrs Hislop left school at 14 years old  to support her mother who struggled with health issues.

She married the love of her life - Alexander Richard Hislop - on June 10, 1932 at All Saints Catholic Church, Liverpool.

On moving to Young in 2004 Mrs Hislop resided in Murringo Street and was involved in the View Club.

She also enjoyed playing lawn bowls while physically able.

Throughout her 100 years Mrs Hislop has witnessed some history-making moments, including three wars, the great depression, the first television and not to mention telephones.

Mrs Hislop’s son, Brian, said the entire family is proud of this milestone.
