It's that time of the week when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young. Every week we aim to compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from May 11-15. A woman was struck by a four-wheel drive on Boorowa Street on Friday, leading to renewed calls for pedestrian crossings on the main street. Police said the 74-year-old woman was crossing the road about 9.30am when she was hit and knocked to the ground by a Toyota Prado - driven by a man in his 40s - who was turning right from a carpark. St Mary’s school and parish community celebrated Sister Philomena Sewell’s 60th anniversary as a Presentation Sister - including 30 years in Young - on Thursday, naming their new shaded area after her. Young Fire and Rescue NSW were on hand to perform the official blessing. Photo submitted.

It’s been a long time coming for the Southern Cross Hall arts complex, but repairs to its roof are just about complete. For as long as Southern Cross Cinema manager Lauren Frith - a former president of the Young and District Arts Council (YDAC) - can remember, the roof has been in dire need of repair, saying it wasn't in good shape 10 years ago. “Help save Nepal! Help save Nepal!” This was the chant that could be heard last Wednesday morning as over 550 Young Public School students and staff trekked up and down Campbell Street waving hand-made banners to raise funds for the earthquake victims of Nepal. A YEAR ago he was destined to become dog meat, but Mister Red Shoes has made a miraculous comeback to win his first race in Young on May 1 from only five starts. When the rest of the world gave up on the five-year-old gelding, local businessman Doug McCormick and partner Karen Lemon purchased him from then owner Geoffrey Brown to spare his life. 

YOUNG’S leading greyhound trainer Paul Wheeler is looking to pull up stumps and leave the industry for good, according to the industry journal The Greyhoud Racer. Mr Wheeler, described by the newspaper as the world’s leading greyhound breeder and owner, says he is disgruntled with the greyhound racing industry leaders. He told the Recorder he wasn’t beyond selling all his dogs to a Chinese businessman if the opportunity presented itself and the price was right.

YOUNG’S Tracie Wells has had a successful start to the year after being named the Reserve Lady Champion at the Sydney Royal Easter Show in April. She was recognised by the Young Sports Advisory Committee for this achievement who awarded her the Senior Sport Award.

The contracts are signed and plans are afoot to launch a college in Young that aims to rejuvenate agricultural education in the country. It’s been a long process for the stakeholders involved in the Australia Agriculture College, after they bought the old Sacred Heart Hospital site  (also known as Mercy Care Hospital) - saving it from potential demolition - last year. 

Two local senior Girl Guides Brianah Griffin and Cassie Boland were recently presented with the Baden-Powell (BP) Award, one of the highest youth awards achievable in the Guides and Girl Scouts movement throughout the world. 

Murringo Road resident Gwen Foster - pictured with husband Gary - knows only too well what lengths local renal patients have to go through to receive dialysis. She’s had to travel to Canberra and Queanbeyan three times a week for the last six years for treatment. And while she’ll be happy when the new Cowra renal dialysis unit is up and running because it’s closer to home, she said it would have been better if the service had come to Young.

YOUNG has joined 11 other regional NSW local councils across the Alpine, Coastal and Southern Tablelands and the ACT Government to announce the launch of the Canberra Region brand. The new regional brand is expected to provide an exciting platform upon which local areas can promote their competitive strengths to potential visitors, investors, students, residents and businesses.

Winner of The Young Witness and Poppa’s Fudge and Jam Factory Mother’s Day competition was Shandelle Carroll, pictured with her with four-month-old daughter Indigo, and Kate Spring and Vicki Powderley of Poppa’s Fudge and Jam Factory.

Classes 2B and 4B treated attendants to a performance during the morning tea. They sang: “Mums are like flowers, beautiful flowers in the garden of life.” They also told the audience why each of their mums were special, ranging from “because she cleans my room” to “because she doesn’t yell as much as dad”.

Glenda Smithers and Beverly Moloney were among the many who attended the Uniting Church Mother’s Day fete on Saturday.

Students from Young, Temora, Boorowa and Murrumburrah took the opportunity to explore future career options and ask questions of people in different industries when they attended the careers expo held at the town hall last week. 

Young Lions Soccer Club’s teams are making their presence felt in the Wagga Football Competition with both now sitting dangerously high on the ladder. The women won 3-1 over competition leaders Junee on the weekend notching them up to equal second on the ladder. Photo Joanne Johnson.

The First Grade Yabbies went down 5-84 to an undefeated Albury side at the weekend. According to club president Ben Reid, Albury fielded a dominant side with a quick back line, making it difficult for Young to defend against. THERE was a mixed bag of results for Young’s football clubs across the weekend with five wins from 11 games the outcome. While the Cherrypickers were responsible for three of those wins, First Grade didn’t fare so well, ending their four-year home ground winning streak against the Wagga Kangaroos in a 10-24 loss. Business owners and working mums and dads look set to be the big winners out of the federal budget, but there are concerns a tax on foreign workers could hurt local orchards. Young’s Baker’s Delight is doing its bit to help raise $1.5 million for the Breast Cancer Network (BCNA) as part of this year’s Pink Bun campaign. Each year in May, every Bakers Delight bakery across Australia donates 100 per cent of the sale of Pink Buns to BCNA, through a colourful and delicious fundraising campaign.

Brooke McClymont from The McClymonts said they’re really excited to be coming back to Young because it’s always a massive turnout. The multi-award winning sister trio will be in town tonight, performing at the Young Services Club as part of their national tour called ‘Forever Begins Tonight’.

FIVE of Young’s junior Cherrypickers starred in Round 1 of the Under 14s Group Nine competition at the weekend. Josh Baker, Henry Berry, Nic Hall, Patrick Mahoney and Steve Anderson (pictured) were up against over 150 players trialling for the side when they caught the eye of selectors at a recent trial match.

Round 1 got underway in cold, wintery conditions at Gus Smith Oval on Saturday. This did not deter from the high quality of soccer displayed by the kids. Adam Pearsall from Carpet Court Under 14s did a great job in defence, cutting short a run made by Eagle Boys last weekend.
