The story is of a little girl Annie (played alternately by Eliza Butt and Madeline Wegmann), escaping an orphanage to try and find her parents.
She wistfully dreams of “Tomorrow” and sings this to a stray dog she has found.
She is caught by the police and taken back to the orphanage run by the mean Miss Hannigan (Kaelene Neville) who hates “Little Girls”.
Annie is chosen to spend Christmas with the billionaire Oliver Warbucks (Leigh Butt) and a new way of life.
The chorus shows her New York in their lively number “NYC’.
Annie still wishes to find her parents and Warbucks offers to help – and even gets President Roosevelt to assist.
Imposters arrive at Warbuck’s mansion, including a Mr and Mrs Mudge (Lloyd Keenan and Vanessa Mitchell) who live on “Easy Street”.
All is revealed and Warbucks, who has become fond of Annie, offers to adopt her. There is a big adoption celebration followed by a Christmas party attended by the orphans and Miss Hannigan.
But that’s not all! Come and see how the show really ends.
The 13 orphan children, of all ages, are thoroughly enjoying being in the show. They have three big songs and dances.
The adult chorus shows us what it was like in the Depression in “Hooverville” – then in contrast life in New York. The chorus also depicts the many servants in Warbuck’s mansion.
The music is great, led by conductor Leisa Kenny.
The sets look fabulous thanks to artist Maree Kirkland and set builder Stuart Hart.
Of course the costumes help add to the 1933 period and Kay McDonald, Margaret Fathers and Kerry Ray have been busy sewing for several weeks. In a show like this there is always a lot of work involved – much behind the scenes – but all hves come together to give our patrons another enjoyable show.
The company is also assisting several local groups by having them cater for supper/afternoon tea. This time we have Young Public School, St Mary’s Primary School, The Young Cadets, Young North Primary School and the Young Scouts. Your attendance will help these organisations.
Bookings are now open at Gilbert’s.
Performances are the last two weekends in May – with two Sunday matinees.
