The Yabbies face a winless Cootamundra side but there will be plenty of pride at stake when the fierce rivals meet tomorrow with the Young rugby club’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations only weeks away.
While the bigger teams from Wagga and Albury have dominated the competition in recent weeks, Yabbies president Ben Reid said there is still plenty of rugby left to make a charge at the finals.
“The competition has been very strong this year, and our boys are acquitting themselves well on the park,” Reid said.
“There is definitely some fire in the belly to get one over Cootamundra and build momentum in to our 60th Anniversary long weekend celebrations in June.”
The Yabbies notched up a win in their first match of the season against Temora but have faced a difficult run with defeats to Wagga Waratahs, Albury and Wagga City away and CSU at home.
Second Grade will also be looking for first blood against the Tricolours, but as with First Grade see the remaining fixtures as an opportunity for a late run to the finals.
The Yabbies will hit the road next Saturday to face Tumut as a curtain raiser for the 60th Anniversary dinner on the June long weekend - 6th June.
The finals run then sees the Yabbies take on Leeton (A), 2014 premiers Griffith (H) and Deniliquin (A – second grade only), after which the competition will split into the Welsh & Blair and Romano’s Cups.
