It's that time of the week when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young. Every week we aim to compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from May 18-22. Thirty years of providing care and assistance to dependants of soldiers killed in active service has resulted in recognition for two local war veterans. Young’s Jane Worner is setting the bar for local women. She's among this year’s cohort of 30 diverse people from around the country who will embark on a unique leadership development experience through the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation over the next 17 months. She's also one of 40 women across Australia to be awarded a scholarship under the Board Diversity Scholarship Program.


This photo, submitted by Gary Perrin, shows his grandfather Herb and his prize horse bearing ribbons from the RAS Show, Sydney in 1934. Herb was the first in the district to win an award at the show, where he claimed first 10” Hack, and first Novice Hack.

The curtain has gone up on the Young Theatre Company’s performance of Annie on the weekend. The production - about a a little girl named Annie (played alternately by Eliza Butt and Madeline Wegmann), escaping an orphanage to try and find her parents - is showing over last two weekends in May – with two Sunday matinees.

Listeners are tuning in from all over the world to listen to three locals cover games of the Young Cherrypickers. Ex footballers Steve Woolford, Stuart Norton and Ray Spring have swapped their boots for microphones and can be found in the commentary box at any First Grade Cherrypicker game, thanks to 2YYY community radio. It is the second year 2YYY has given the ‘Pickers the opportunity to commentate live streaming all over the world - a convenience for families of signings who tune in from as far away as New Zealand and England.

This year’s Jason Sams Memorial Sevens Challenge champions have been recognised with a Young Sports Advisory Committee award. The team Can’t Bowl There took out the honours in the grand final on the Sunday of the tournament, January 25, against Grenfell. Team captain and Player of the Grand Final, Geoff Palmer, accepted the local sports award on behalf of his team.

Going undefeated in the Sutherland Intercept Croquet Carnival has earnt Edna Kelly and Doug Leabeater a local sports award. The A Grade duo was awarded a Young Sports Advisory Committee award for their efforts in the doubles competition in February.

The new scourge of the drug world “ice” was the topic of discussion at a special forum held at Young Shire Council’s community meeting room yesterday. Town leaders, representatives of health and emergency services gathered for the two hour round table forum to discuss the current situation with ice in the local community and determine the best way forward in the form of suggestions from all participants.

A joyride in a helicopter in front of your school mates is possibly the best early birthday present any soon-to-be eight-year-old could ask for. Year 2 student at Young North Public School, Cooper Wrona - who turns eight tomorrow - was the lucky student selected to hop aboard a private helicopter as part of the Variety AHA NSW Bash visit to the school on Monday. But that wasn’t before a 75 vintage car convoy and 250 “Bashers”, dressed up as all sorts of characters, descended on the grounds almost three hours earlier. Photo Christine Speelman.

The headlines in The Young Witness on Friday,  May 15 proved to be correct when top weight, Zarreig took the Young Hotel, South West Credit Union Young Cup back to Leeton following the Young Turf Club races. Beautiful conditions greeted racegoers at the Toompang Racecourse.

And enjoying a day out with the family at the Young Turf Club meeting on Saturday, May 16 were Eric, Stephen, Oliver, Kaden, Josephine, Evie and Bella Webb.

The surprise resignation of the four representative selectors will allow Group Nine to usher in a vibrant new era next year. Group Nine president and chairman of selectors Jack Morton revealed the members of the selection panel had all agreed “the time was right” to finish up and that “young blood” was needed. On Saturday the men’s monthly medal for May was held with 68 players hitting the fairways. Andrew Miller (pictured left with Martyse) took the honours for A Grade and Ben Lucas for B Grade.

Young Shire Council has been unanimous in its support for a petition requesting the reversal of a recent decision by the state government not to install a satellite managed renal unit in Young. Cr Stuart Freudenstein (pictured) made the urgent plea and it has the promise of at least two councillors who told Wednesday night’s monthly council meeting they would pound the street getting signatures. Young had recorded more rain in the last three days (May 19-21)  than what it’s received all month.
A total 22.8mm of rain had been recorded at the Bureau of Meterology’s  (BOM) weather station at Young Airport since Tuesday. Around 37mm of rain fell within a 10 minute period out at Thuddungra on Wednesday afternoon. This photo taken on Kikiamah Lane by Chris Holland told the story.

Yes, Saturday was the day to weave your way down to Young Town Hall for the Young Lions Club’s big event of the year - the annual Quilt Show. The display showcased quilts created by quilters throughout the district and beyond using a variety of designs and fabrics. More than 400 people packed the auditorium at the Young Services Club to watch country music sister trio Mollie, Brooke and Sam McClymont perform last Friday night. There were only three tickets left one hour before the show. The night attracted people from all around including Cowra, Grenfell, Harden, Parkes, Canowindra, Canberra, Temora and even Darwin. The NSW Masters Road Championships attracts the who’s who of racing, and two of Young’s top cyclists will be among those big names. Kevin Goodman and Darren Russell headed to Griffith on Saturday for the championships which attracted over 300 competitors from around Australia. The Young Cherrypickers’ First Grade side is now complete following the arrival of signing Isaac Maliota (pictured) on Tuesday night. Maliota is the sixth and final signing for the ‘Pickers, and will debut for the team in Round 7 this weekend. Photo Elouise Hawkey.

The Burrangong Bears’ league tag team had a good start to their match against Cargo on the weekend but their had work right down to the final whistle was to no avail with Cargo running out winners. Pictured Burrangong Bears league tag player Anna Slavin. 

The Under 11s Lachlan Lions travelled to Orange to compete in Round 2 of the Youth League competition. The team showed great defence and handy footwork by the forwards. Pictured is local player Aiden Hines (left) in action on the weekend.
