Last week Goodman told The Young Witness his sights were set on the podium and that’s exactly where he ended up. Three times over, in fact.
Goodman’s first taste of glory was in the 70km road race where he placed second, followed by a win in the criterium.
He said he was at a distinct advantage in these categories due to having two fellow team mates by his side.
“We took it in turns in driving away from the group and taking off [during the road race],” he said.
“We broke away from the group, about a minute ahead, and the three of us sprinted for the end.
“I stuck my neck out a bit, but it was good to finally get on [the podium].”
It was a similar situation during the criterium, although this time it was Goodman who won by two seconds.
The time trial was a case of déjà vu for Goodman who came second to the same team mate who beat him in the road race.
Armed with his gold and silver medals Goodman realised the extent of his achievements.
“It was fantastic, beyond what I expected,” he said.
“I’d have liked a podium in one of them, but I exceeded my expectations.”
Russell also hit his target of finishing within the top seven among what he described as a high calibre of riders.
Things were looking good for Russell until 17kms to go when he cramped in the quadriceps.
“I couldn’t pedal as strong as I wanted to, therefore I pedalled it out in a smaller gear to relieve tention on my legs,” he said.
Unable to race to his full potential Russell fell back into the main field consisting of around 40 riders, before finishing in sixth position.
The duo are certainly making up for lost time over the years, and are already lined up to compete in the Sydney Road Titles over the June long weekend, and the NSW Team Time Trial at Nowra in July.
Goodman will also compete in the World Road Racing Championships in Europe in early September, followed by the national championships in Tweed Heads at the end of September.
