The 21-year-old has had an important role at the PCYC for just under 12 months, working as an educator and conducting after-school care and vacation care.

After attending training in Sydney, run by the Network of Community Services, Jess made such an impression she was invited to a three-day conference in Sydney on May 22.

During a presentation night on the Saturday, Jess was presented the award by Network CEO, Robyn Miller.

“It’s exciting, I didn't know I was going to get it and it makes me feel like we’ve done a lot of good work [at the PCYC],” she said.

“Although I won the award I think Tammi (PCYC coordinator) and all the girls who are part of Kids Care have pushed our service forward and if the service wasn’t in the place it’s in I would have gotten the award.”

The Rookie of the Year award is presented to nominees who have been in after hours school care for under two years who display dedication, understanding and willingness to work toward bettering the centre and working as a team.

Young PCYC manager Martin Langfield said Jess is a deserving recipient who interacts well with kids, parents and staff.

She will continue to work at the PCYC, while studying a diploma in early childhood.
