It's that time of the week when we take a look back at what's been happening in Young. Every week we aim to compile our top stories from around the shire over the last seven days&nbsp;to form this photo gallery and keep you updated. This week's news summary&nbsp;is from June 29-July 3.

Gemma Flannery has just set off on a journey only a handful of Australian youths get to experience. IT took two weeks for councillors Stuart Freudenstein and Ben Cooper to collect 3985 names and just two working days to reach the hands of the NSW health minister. Two weeks ago the petition protesting the loss of managed satellite renal unit in Young was tabled in state parliament, travelling to Sydney with state Labor MLC Mick Veitch.

A new fixed wireless tower near Wombat village has been activated and the news reached the higher echelons of power as Member for Hume Angus Taylor made the announcement to parliament. Meanwhile Katrina Hodgkinson announced that Murringo was one of six beneficiaries in the Cootamundra electorate to benefit from the installation of 10 additional mobile network towers - thus eliminating some of the electorate’s worst black spots.


This photo, brought in by John R Barton, is a behind-the-scenes shot at The Young Witness (when it occupied space on the opposite side of Boorowa Street) in the 1940s.  And here we have the editor and part-proprietor of The Witness - Frank Henry Hopwood, with Jack Barton, Roy Heise and Jim Anderson standing around the old makeup table or “stone” where a large metal frame called a "chase" was placed and the lead typeset placed inside it.

Assault rates on licensed premises in the South West Slopes area have dropped by 63 per cent since 2008, 29 per cent in Young. That was the news coming from Australian Hotels Association (AHA) NSW director of liquor and gaming John Green, who was in town recently for the South West Slopes sub-branch meeting at the Empire Hotel with local hoteliers. In what has been described as a rare moment for organisers, the first 25 entries in the popular annual Veterans Week of Golf are all first-timers. A driver ploughed through two fences and came to a halt just metres from a church on Wednesday morning. Police said the 51-year-old man had suffered a medical episode as he entered the roundabout in Lynch Street, his car ploughing straight through the roundabout's pedestrian barrier and the fence of the Uniting Church hall. It took James Lamb longer than he anticipated to climb the equivalent vertical metres as Mt Everest in Young’s William Street, but that proud sense of achievement was no less significant when he finished his final lap just after midnight. At 4am he schlepped up and down the street outside his old school 250 times or 320 kilometres to raise money for Nepal’s earthquake victims. It took James 20 hours to complete the event, finishing his final lap by 12.28am Saturday.



FORMER Quandialla resident Michelle Dowsett says she is “enjoying the greatest gift there is, life” due to the Royal Flying Doctors Service. She said “how can you ever repay someone for your life, you can’t", but her students at Blayney High School are so grateful they are raising funds for the charity.

Treating patients outside of business hours was something Young District Medical Centre manager David Kay said was “out of the question” for his practice. He said his doctors were already flat out covering the practice and the after hours services at the hospital.

Young Public School student Elisabeth Hall has won the district finals of the 2015 Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking competition in Cowra. The adjudicator said Elisabeth’s impromptu speech on the topic of “Bigger is better” was exceptional, and she gained first place overall.


Days of soaking rain provided ideal conditions for a morning’s tree planting at Chance Gully in Young. Annabelle Richens and Jayda Hall were among the 20 people, including nine children, who took part in the planting on Sunday, June 21, organised by Gumtree Nursery and Young District Landcare, with the support of Young Shire Council.

It’s official, Young has the biggest and youngest population, the most number of women and the most number of businesses compared to its neighbours. But the town also has the lowest average annual wage. The Australian Bureau of Statistics this week released the latest regional statistics from 2013.

That smiling, familiar face that is John Hamblin - spent decades greeting dozens of customers and clients - this week he signed-off. If one man has seen the changes in how milk and soft drinks have been delivered to local businesses over the years, it’s Paul “Happy” Richens. The Southern Cross Retirement Village in Hennessy Close had 11 reasons to celebrate recently as its staff members accumulated a total of 110 years of service. One staff member celebrated 35 years, while 10 others reached five and 10 years.
