Leave a tribute for Georgia here.
THE mother of a Heathcote girl killed in a car crash in Queensland on Friday has described her daughter as full of love and compassion for her friends and family.
Georgia Edsall-French, 15, was killed when the car she was travelling in with her mother and two of her sisters collided head-on with a utility on the Bruce Highway, 10 kilometres south of Bowen on Queensland’s mid-north coast.
The Bendigo South East College Year 9 student’s death caused an outpouring of grief in her hometown of Heathcote on the weekend and among the wider school community.
Mother Kym Edsall said it was not just a loss for the family, but for everyone who knew Georgia.
“I’m not surprised by the overwhelming grief from everyone who knew her, it’s a loss for so many people,” she said.
“She was full of love and compassion. Everyone was touched by her, she was adored.”
Georgia played under-17 netball for Heathcote, where the sideline cheering from the then 13-year-old “got the team over the line” for their 2013 premiership, her mother said.
The family has a close connection with Heathcote Football Netball Club. Her father Terry French was both a three-time premiership player and a former club president.
He flew up to Queensland on Saturday to be with the family.
The club held a minute’s silence before the seniors matches on Saturday, where spectators and players shed tears together and openly embraced one another.
Ms Edsall said Georgia loved being a part of a team, whether it was netball or on the school’s soccer team, and everyone loved having her around.
“She loved life, she loved her friends,” she said.
“I feel lucky to have known her for those 15 years. I just wish there were more.”
Georgia was also passionate about her guitar, but it was her friends who were always the number one in her mind.
She made dozens of friends at Heathcote Primary School, and then even more when she went on to study at BSE College.
Principal Ernie Fleming said the school community was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
“She was a beautiful young lady,” he said.
“Our thoughts are with the family as they try to deal with this tragic loss.”
Close family friend and under-17 football coach Mick Tobin said the news had been “shattering” for Heathcote.
“Georgia was very bubbly, she always had a cheeky smile,” he said.
“For the under-17 teams it’s been particularly hard, it’s a very emotional time for them.”
Georgia, the second oldest child of the family of five daughters, had been enjoying a holiday in Queensland – her favourite holiday destination – with her mother and two sisters, aged 11 and 8.
Heathcote Football Netball Club president Leroy Troy said the club would organise a special event to support the family in the coming weeks.
