In fact, only a quarter of the local sporting teams were triumphant on the weekend.
The Yabbies’ senior sides won both their matches when they came up against Deniliquin on Saturday. As Deni doesn’t field a First Grade side, only two grades took to the park.
Second Grade stepped up to the mark to overcome Deni 17-12, and, continuing their good form of recent weeks, the Women’s Sevens team also took a convincing 27-7 victory.
Yabbies president Ben Reid said the club will go into the next round against CSU Wagga with confidence, and is pleased with where the teams are positioned in the lead-up to the finals.
In the ACT competition the Under 18 Yabbies endured a 48-nil loss against Radford College, and the Under 16s went down 43-10 against competition leaders, Royals, at Cranfield Oval.
“The boys showed their typical spirit during a tough encounter, but the superior weight and strength of the Royals forward pack proved too much,” coach Don Blue said.
“Yabbies Number 8 Ben Davis had his best game of the season so far, leading the defence against the hard-running Royals front row.”
With consecutive losses against top sides in the last two weeks the Yabbies 16s now need to win two of their last three games to guarantee a place in the final four.
The Cherrypickers followed the Yabbies’ trend, taking only two wins from five grades.
The Under 16s started the day on a high with a 20-12 win over the Wagga Kangaroos, which was followed by an enormous 88-nil win for Young in the 18s.
In League Tag the Cherryettes were put in their place when suffering a 12-6 defeat, and the points slipped away from Young in Reserve Grade on going down 32-6.
In First Grade the Kangaroos overwhelmed Young for the second time in as many games this season, putting their finals hopes in doubt to the ring of 32-10.
Fighting to get a win on the table, the Burrangong Bears again went down to the Cargo Blue Heelers.
The League Tag side kept the points reasonably low, going down 18-nil, and in First Grade Cargo continued the Bears’ losing streak, 66-6.
In the Central West AFL competition the Dubbo Demons were too strong for the Saints.
Young went down 4-7-31 to Dubbo’s 5-2-32 in the seniors, and due to a lack of numbers in the 18s the Saints were forced to forfeit.
And continuing their tough month the Young Lions’ First Grade team sustained their maiden home ground loss of the season.
Junee toppled Young in a 5-1 defeat on Sunday which pushed the Lions back to fourth position on the Pascoe Cup ladder.
The women’s side had a bye and look to secure a finals position as the season draws to an end.
