Rebounding in style after an unflattering win over Tumbarumba a week ago, Kangaroos overwhelmed Young for the second time in as many games this season.
With the teams locked 10-all at half-time, Roos snuffed out Young’s challenge with four unanswered tries in the second half, ultimately romping away 32-10.
For Roos, the landslide six tries to two tries victory was an almost mirror image of their 24-10 triumph over Young at Alfred Oval on May 10.
Two months ago, Kangaroos and Young were also level at 10-all at half-time before the Wagga team bagged the only 14 points of the second half.
As Roos captain-coach Adam Hall tried hard to play down the significance of Saturday’s success, injured Young counterpart Luke Branighan could not hide his disappointment.
Forced to watch from the bench because of a calf muscle problem, Branighan later chided his team for the performance.
“There was plenty of effort, but we played a lot of dumb football,” Branighan said.
“We were lost a bit in attack.
“We didn’t make the most of our chances.”
Clearly missing Branighan’s skill and creativity, Young pounded Roos try-line at times, but invariably came up empty.
Significantly, Young got off to a flyer with a storming try to Warren Aiken in the second minute and were up 10-4 after veteran Nick Hall crashed over for a try in the 27th minute.
And that was as good as it got for the Cherrypickers, with Roos snatching a try 30 seconds from half-time to level up – and not conceding another point.
In the process, Young’s prospects of qualifying for the Group Nine finals took a heavy hit, slipping to sixth on the ladder.
Branighan was later not walking away from the task confronting the team in the coming weeks.
“It’s simple,” he said.
“We need to win our last three games to have a shot.”
