A taxi driver has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run crash in which a 94-year-old woman was killed in Sydney's north, police say.

The 51-year-old man was arrested on O'Riordan Street in Alexandria on Tuesday night and charged over the death of the pedestrian in Crows Nest earlier in the day.
Police and paramedics were called to the Pacific Highway, outside North Sydney Girls High School, about 11.20am on Tuesday to reports that a woman had been struck by a vehicle.
Police will allege in court that the woman was trying to cross the road, at a pedestrian crossing at the highway's intersection with Rocklands Road, when she was knocked down by a taxi, which then left the scene.
Witnesses rushed to the woman's aid, but she could not be saved.
Her shopping cart, walking stick and a shoe were left scattered on the road.
The taxi driver arrested on Tuesday night was taken to Redfern police station.
He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist after a vehicle impact causing death, and negligent driving occasioning death.
The South Granville man was refused bail by police and is due to appear in Central Local Court on Wednesday.
