It's been less than three weeks since Jon Stewart ended his two-decade tenure of The Daily Show, and already a petition to have him return to television is going gangbusters.

Stewart was a fierce commentator on politics, and spent the last month of his show lampooning American presidential candidate and billionaire, Donald Trump, for his nonsensical views.

Perhaps it's no surprise then, that a petition calling for Stewart to moderate the 2016 Presidential Debate is one of the fastest-growing on the internet.

Before each US election, televised debates are held between presidents and their challenges, or the two candidates vying for the top job.

The Change.org petition created by New Jersey woman Mariel Waters describes Stewart as the right man for the job.

"Jon Stewart is more than qualified to tackle the moderating job," she wrote.

"Mr. Stewart has interviewed 15 heads of state, 22 members of the United States Cabinet, 32 members of the United States Senate, 7 members of the United States House of Representatives, and scores of other political leaders from this country and around the world while establishing himself as the most trusted person in (satirical) news."

The award-winning talk show host was ranked as one of America's most trusted news sources and was renowned for cutting through the nonsense of nightly news with wit, brevity and humour.

On their blog, Change.org acknowledged the Jon Stewart petition was the fastest-growing petition on the site. On Friday, the website said it had grown 2500 per cent since Wednesday.

Stewart has won two Peabody Awards - which recognises outstanding public service in radio and television - for his coverage of the 2000 and 2004 American presidential races.

While it is unlikely the departed talk show host will moderate the debate, petitions to the Commission on Presidential Debates have been successful before.

In 2012, three high school students convinced the commission to select a woman to host the debate between President Barack Obama and Mitt Romney after discovering a woman hadn't moderated since 1992.

For now, we live in hope of seeing a day where Jon Stewart moderates a debate which involves Donald Trump.
