There’s no easy way for Kristine Parsons to say it but the Young branch of the Australian Red Cross is in crisis.

The local charity is one of the oldest branches in regional Australia, just last year celebrating its centenary.
Now its future is in jeopardy and closure is conceivable after the branch failed to get the numbers to re-elect a new committee for the coming year.
Just six people attended their annual general meeting held four weeks ago.
At the time Kristine (pictured left) was hoping to step down as president after a 12 month stint in the role.
Nancy Heffer (pictured right) was also hoping to relinquish her role as secretary after 10 years of service.
But the meeting failed to appoint anyone in the four requisite positions.
Kristine said the lack of numbers had forced their hand in having to decide whether the Red Cross in Young continues as a branch or converts to club status.
She hopes it won’t come to that.
Her hopes are pinned on an extraordinary meeting next Tuesday, September 1.
“A branch requires a committee and treasurer - a club would require a liaison officer to coordinate operations,” Kristine said.
She also said that if they were to become a club, all funds raised would go to head office and would somewhat restrict it being spent locally.
“We don’t want to do that (become a club) but we’d rather that than see it fold altogether,” she said.
“We don’t want to consider closing, we’ll just have to see what happens at the meeting.”
Nancy said it was a shame possible closure was being discussed.
But she admitted they could see the writing on the wall earlier in the year when they were struggling for numbers.
“We just need people to step up, we need enough people interested and possibly taking office,” she said.
Kristine said the work didn’t involve much, just fundraising a few times a year and catering for local events to support the community.
“We don’t care who you are, we just need people to help,” Kristine said.
The meeting will be held at 1.30pm, September 1 in the Young Community Transport conference room in the Marie McCormick Centre.
