To be run at the Young Services Club from 10am-4pm, the Better Money Management program offers regional women access to expert financial education, free of charge and without having to travel huge distances.
It is being run by not-for-profit financial wellbeing social enterprise 10thousandgirl, with government and corporate financial support.
Supported nationally by Rabobank, the two-year program comprises a roadshow of 16 regional workshops, a suite of online financial educational tools and bi-monthly webinars, with the second roadshow workshop being held in Young on Saturday, August 29.
Zoe Lamont is the 10thousandgirl founder and CEO, who grew up on her family’s property near Junee and is now based in Cootamundra, NSW.
“Young has a vibrant community where over half the working population are women,” she said.
“We’re excited to be bringing the women here an opportunity to help secure their financial futures.”
She said women invest heavily in their professions, families and communities, but often neglect investing in their own financial stability.
“We are likely to earn $1 million less than men during our working lives, get more stressed out by money than men, and are 2.5 times more likely than men to live in poverty during old age,” she said.
Zoe said 10thousandgirl wants to change this outlook for women across Australia.
“Our objective is to create the opportunity for women, no matter where they live, to learn the skills and build the confidence to become better at managing the money they have, so they have the financial acumen to achieve their dreams,” she said.
A key feature of the workshop in Young will be a Q&A panel session with local financial experts, who will present their insights into financial management fundamentals, while offering participants the opportunity to ask specific questions to further their knowledge.
Topics to be covered include investment principles, financial planning, tax tips, succession planning, solutions to barriers and support mechanisms.
The panel will comprise:
• Tom O’Brien, certified practising accountant, Young Taxation
• Catherine Chalker, certified financial planner, ABS Financial Planning, Wagga
• Justine Back, certified financial planner, Back to Back Financial Planning, Young
• Vanessa Gibson, Partner, Gordon Garling Moffitt Lawyers, Young
• Rebecca Metuisela, Member Education Manager, HESTA, NSW Regional
The workshop will also provide information and tools to help participants document key life goals and priorities,
They will be assisted in completing a personal financial review and investment plan, including a spending plan, balance sheet, debt review, insurance audit and superannuation audit.
