Ausgrid told customers via Twitter that the outage was due to a fault in the underground network, and hoped to have fixed the problem between 9pm and 10pm.
@charliechad97 Hi Charlie. At this stage we hope to have it back by 10pm, but it depends on the extent of any damage.— Ausgrid (@Ausgrid) August 26, 2015
Twitter user Gladde Glenn reported hearing a "huge bang" near the corner of La Perouse and Griffith streets.
"Sounded like it was near Manly West Primary on Hill St," @gladdeglenn responded in a Tweet to Ausgrid when the network provider asked where they had heard to bang.
"It may help us locate the cause," Ausgrid tweeted prior to its tweet identifying the fault on the underground network near Waratah Street.
The cause of the network fault was unknown, but a spokesperson for Ausgrid said the loud bang was likely the protection mechanism kicking in to shut down the network due to interference.
"It could possibly be an animal ... possibly a possum. At this stage we don't know," the spokesman said.
It has been an busy night for Ausgrid.
Earlier in the evening roughly 2,400 homes and business lost power in Dulwich Hill and Marrickville.
