To make things even more interesting, if Kyrgios can somehow topple the 2012 US champion, he will be one match closer to a potential quarter-final encounter with none other than Stan Wawrinka - the man he infuriated after muttering on court: "Kokkinakis banged your girlfriend, sorry to tell you that mate" in a match at the Montreal Masters earlier this month.

It has been an eventful few weeks for the 20-year-old Australian, who was fined $10,000 for the derogatory sledge and has drawn the ire of a number of high-profile players including Rafael Nadal.

Before that, in the second round of Wimbledon, Kyrgios tried to belittle a chair umpire who he said "was a big dog" before asking him directly: "Does it feel good to be in the chair up there? Does it feel strong to be up there?"

His first assignment though, against Murray, whom he has never beaten, will not only be a tough battle on the court, but also up in the stands with members of Murray's animated entourage ready to let fly if necessary.

Murray's girlfriend Kim Sears isn't shy of getting behind her man in a scrap. Sears caused controversy and a social media storm during a tense semi-final at the Australian Open last year when she was seen mouthing what appeared to be the words "f---ing have it you Czech flash f---" as Murray broke back in the first set against Tomas Berdych.

Sears then took a potshot at the haters by wearing a shirt in Murray's next match which read: "Parental Advisory - Explicit Content."

If Kyrgios gets animated on the court - a very likely possibility - or even tries to sledge the Scotsman, those in Murray's box will be there to back him up quicker than you can say Kokkinakis. 

If Kyrgios and Wawrinka do end up playing each other in the third round, the on-court tension and lack of pleasantries exchanged will be there for all to see.

Wawrinka is still privately seething at Kyrgios' lack of respect in that bitter encounter and will be out for revenge should they meet at Flushing Meadows.

"I think there are things, regardless of who you are, regardless of the stress you have on the court, there things that you just can't say," Wawrinka said after the match. "And regardless of whether or not he sidesteps it, I think the way he behaves on the court, he has big problems."

Bernard Tomic will play Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur and Lleyton Hewitt has to overcome 96th-ranked Kazakhstani Aleksandr Nedovyesov if he's to continue in the tournament he won in 2001.

19-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis will play 12th seed Richard Gasquet.
