About 11.45pm police from Cootamundra Local Area Command spoke with a man in Cloete Street after he was seen armed with a firearm.
A short time later, the man sustained a gunshot wound and died at the scene.
No police firearms were discharged and no police officers were injured.
An independent critical incident team from The Hume Local Area Command will investigate all circumstances surrounding the incident.
All information will be provided to the coroner, who will determine the cause of death and make any findings about the events leading to the man’s death.
No further details are available at this time; however, police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
