Up to 55 people from near and far – including Grong Grong, Parkes, Narrabri and Griffith – descended on the Young Golf Club for the event which was hosted by the NSW Farmers Association.
Australian Pork and Pork CRC representatives discussed what’s happening in the industry and updated delegates on industry innovations, carbon tax implications and carbon farming initiatives, power generation initiatives and the future of the pigmeat industry.
Case studies on group housing pigs were also presented.
Local pig farmers Jamie Anderson and Jason Hyam from Windridge were among those present and were particularly looking forward to discussions on the case studies.
Local pork producer Ean Pollard, who sits on the NSW Farmers’ Pork Committee, helped organise the event.
Mr Pollard said the NSW Farmers Association held meetings all around NSW and chose Young because it’s a good central area and it has a big pig industry.
Australian rugby union great Mark Ella was guest speaker at the association’s industry dinner that night.
Local pork wholesaler Matthew Houston donated the meat for the dinner.
“It’s all about supporting the industry,” Mr Houston said.
Both Mr Pollard and Mr Houston have been representing the industry for a long time – Mr Pollard’s family started producing pork in 1967 while Mr Houston has been wholesaling since 1988.
