With lucky timing, the first biography of Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull will be out six weeks after his elevation. Born to Rule by Sydney journalist Paddy Manning was due out on November 11 (the date of another coup) but Melbourne University Press will have it in shops on October 26. Manning, the author of a biography of fallen mining magnate Nathan Tinkler, is hurrying to update the manuscript and put it to bed. "I will definitely take in what's happened this week. The last chapter has written itself," he told Undercover. He raised the idea of a biography with the Minister for Communications last year but Turnbull has refused interviews for the unauthorised biography. Manning says: "Most of the year I was thinking Turnbull's time had come and gone and perhaps in retrospect he should have put his hand up in February for his one chance to be Prime Minister. It was only with Bronwyn Bishop's 'choppergate' [in July] that it started to feel as if the tide was turning on Abbott." Asked if there's anything in the book to embarrass the Prime Minister, he says, "I'm not going to get into that. I'm trying to put out a balanced version of his life story. He's had a rich, full life – five or six lives."

ROMANCE CONTINUES

All the teenagers (and adults) who first adored Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance Twilight in 2005 are 10 years older and the author, who still lives in Arizona with her husband and three sons, is a lot richer. Twilight and its six sequels and spin-offs have sold almost 155 million copies worldwide, the film adaptations have grossed more than a billion dollars, and they spawned a fantasy sub-genre. Hachette is bringing out a special 10th anniversary edition in hardback and ebook on October 7 and Meyer is appearing at events in the US including last weekend's annual book signing in Forks, Washington. Her popularity seems undimmed as her website advises fans to pre-register, line up an hour in advance, and bring no more than five books for signing.

DAMNED WHORES TURNS 40

Anne Summers' feminist history of women in Australia, Damned Whores and God's Police, which could be called the much older, wiser sister of Twilight, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. A three-day conference (September 21-23) at the University of Technology, Sydney, will look at where we've come. Summers' keynote speech will be followed by talks on 21st Century Damned Whores, Our Sexuality: Viva la Vulva, What Became of Liberation? Women's Work, Women Online, Writing Women's History, and Looking Forward. Speakers include Quentin Bryce and Elizabeth Broderick on domestic violence, Lt. Gen. David Morrison on a man's journey to understanding women's challenges, Annabel Crabb, Emily Maguire, Penny Wong, Dennis Altman and Larissa Behrendt. There are audience discussions, a party with music by Margret RoadKnight, and dinner speaker Jessica Rowe. Penguin kept the book in print until 2008 and it has been on school and university reading lists in most states. Summers published an ebook last year and in 2016 NewSouth will release an updated print edition. "I have been gratified at how well remembered it is and how the title still resonates," Summers says. "There has been a big rush on the ebook in advance of the conference."
