The challenge involves students in Years 7 and 8 from around the region.
This year they gathered at Cootamundra High School with Young High School entering a boys and a girls team in the challenge. The team was accompanied by Mrs Telford and Mr Lokudu.
Teams were put to the test in areas such as problem solving, patterns, algebra, space and geometry, solving equations with speed and a letters and numbers challenge.
By the end of the event Young’s Year 8 boys - Rhys Staff, Nick Kennedy, Matt Zuzek, Jordan Osmond and Will West - were named overall victors.
The girls team consisted of Emma Godsell, Ashleigh Bennett, Sally Pattrick and Natasha Cosgrove.
One member of the boys team, Matt Zuzek was a member of the school’s winning team last year.
The boys said they were proud of their win and found some questions in the challenge hard while others were quite easy.
“We weren’t nervous – we were just there to have fun. You’ve just got to be confident,” Jordan Osmond said.
But they also admitted they had an idea they had won the challenge before the winner was announced.
“We were a bit surprised when we won but they gave us some clues [beforehand],” Rhys Staff said.
“They said the winner had two teams and their name was at the bottom of the alphabet – I’m like righto that’s us!” Rhys explained.
