The competition first kicked off in November 2003 as the result of a suggestion by the late Guy Pickering.

It proved so popular, the 10 teams competing in the inaugural event exceeded even his expectations.

Two years later, in 2005, the competition bore his name after his sudden passing in January.

And his legacy continues to live on, not once a year but in four competitions that benefit local charities.

One group in particular - the Rugby League Old Boys - have shown consistent support for the competition from its inception.

The competition is split into two nights, with the overall winners of each division to compete in the championships.

At the end of the competition the overall champion teams nominate a charity of their choice to receive their prize money.

Each charity nominated by a winning team receives $250. 

For several years the competition has produced four division winners each year for an annual total of $1000.

Over the years a number of players who started bowling in the night bowls competitions have decided to become regular bowlers and play in the more competitive bowls events.

CanAssist, St Vincent de Paul, Young Riding for the Disabled and Young Community Transport are some of the charities to benefit from the competition.

Numerous club members have assisted with the running of the competition, as well as the sausage sizzle which is an integral part of each night.

The next competition will commence on Tuesday, October 13 and will also be played on Wednesday and Thursday nights. 

The Wednesday night division will replace Business House bowls.

Play starts at 6.30pm each night and the cost is $10 per player per night which includes the sausage sizzle.
