Former world no.1 Westwood, who outgunned Greg Norman on the fourth play-off hole to win the Stonehaven Cup at Melbourne's Metropolitan Golf Club in 1997, will be a major drawcard at The Australian Golf Club.

He will be joined by his great friend in Northern Irishman Clarke, who won his first major at the age of 42 with a stirring British Open triumph four years ago.

Tournament organisers are expected to sign off on the pair's arrival on Tuesday.

The additions of two of Europe's most enduring professionals will be a welcome one for Australian Open officials, who have already lured world No.1 Jordan Spieth to defend his title alongside former US Masters champion Adam Scott.

Spieth traipsed the path of 2013 Australian Open champion Rory McIlroy, vaulting to world No.1 months after a successful record-breaking raid on the Australian Open.

He won the US Masters and US Open this year and only succumbed in the US PGA to Jason Day, who will skip the Australian summer to be with his wife Ellie for the impending birth of their second child.

McIlroy and Spieth have cradled the Stonehaven Cup in the past two years after home-grown products won 14 of the 15 tournaments contested after Westwood's groundbreaking win.

The 42-year-old Westwood has endured a torrid year off the course, splitting with wife of 16 years Laurae and only playing sparingly in recent months.

But it is impossible to question his credentials in a career which has yielded 42 titles across the United States, European, Asian and South African tours to go alongside his Australian Open success.

Regarded as one of the best players of the modern era yet to win a major, the Englishman has 17 top-10 finishes in the sport's big four and famously ended the reign of Tiger Woods as world no.1 in 2010, recapturing the top ranking again briefly the following year.

Fourteen-time European Tour winner Clarke remains one of the most popular figures in the game and his British Open success capped a stunning run for Northern Ireland after McIlroy's US Open crown followed Graeme McDowell's win in the same event the previous year.

Attention is now likely to turn to confirming the availability of Australia's President's Cup representatives Marc Leishman and Steven Bowditch, both of whom scored upset wins on the final day of singles in Korea on Sunday.

Leishman accounted for Spieth while Bowditch tamed Jimmy Walker as the Internationals came within a whisker of winning the event for the second time in its history.

The Australian Open, which will remain in Sydney for the next eight years, will be played from November 26-29.
