I played beer pong at a mate's house one New Year's Eve, that seemed like a bit of fun, let's get that in there as well.

Not to mention the game I played at a Prague pub where you have to drive nails into a tree stump with the back of a brick hammer - reckon I could get a medal in that.

And while we're at it, why don't we throw in beach cricket, surely everyone around the world plays that on Christmas Day just like we do Down Under.

Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland thinks it's a great idea.

"Beach cricket is not a silly idea. Nor is indoor cricket," he was heard to say on national radio.

Sorry James - I hope you don't mind me calling you James - but it's a very silly idea, bordering on ludicrous.

Naturally I checked the calendar to make sure it wasn't still April. Then I checked it wasn't October 1, just in case that's when they celebrate April Fool's Day in the northern hemisphere.

Apparently it's not. Apparently people are actually serious about cricket becoming an Olympic sport - regardless of what form it's in.

The International Cricket Council are meeting with the International Olympic Committee later this month to state their case to become part of the ever increasing number of Olympic sports that have no place being there.

At best, cricket could have a case to be in the Commonwealth Games, given almost all of the countries that play it are part of the Commonwealth.

But the Olympics? Please.

There's only three or four countries that can actually play the game - Australia, South Africa and India, with England and New Zealand fighting over the other spot. (Given the way the Test series between the Aussies and Kiwis has started, I'm leaning towards the Poms at the moment.)

The competition for a gold medal would only be slightly less farcical than the circus that is men's basketball, which has become a joke since the US Dream Team was allowed to grace the Olympic village.

With that decision to change the qualification criteria for men's basketball from essentially amateur to professional, the IOC has ever increasingly made a joke of themselves.

There's a growing list of sports that have no place at what was once the bastion of amateur excellence.

Tennis, beach volleyball, golf and rugby sevens are other sports that really shouldn't be there.

If you want to watch Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, wait for Wimbledon. If you want to see Rory McIlroy and Jason Day go head-to-head, there's the British Open.

The Olympics means nothing in the grand scheme of either of these sports, with their millionaires chasing an elusive grand slam.

You could make an argument for women's golf, where the riches are far less than for their male counterparts.

But relevance is unimportant. Nowadays it's all about maximising marketing reach to the IOC's sponsors so we all buy more of their official colas and burgers.

When you think about it, it's hard to believe FIFA hasn't pushed the IOC into turning the men's soccer into a poor person's version of the World Cup.

Just imagine the marketing potential of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi unleashed on the Olympic stage. I can hear the cash registers turning over in the background already.

But cricket can't even be justified on marketing grounds, especially if it's beach cricket - although sales of coloured zinc cream will go through the roof.

Adding it to the Games isn't going to bring in a flood of new fans, it might even drive them away.

Some people might boycott watching beach cricket simply because of the rules - is it one-hand, one-bounce? Is in-the-sea-on-the-full out? Are you allowed to roll the pitch between innings? Is it a regulation tennis ball or can an IOC-approved brand of tape be applied?

There's some big decisions there that could lead to international incidents on a similar scale to Bodyline and the Trevor Chappell underarm - a special shout out to all our Kiwi readers, whose blood will be boiling at the very mention of that wonderful day in international cricket.

The Olympics used to be about the pinnacle of a sport. The fastest and strongest men and women from around the globe gathering to decide who was the world's best.

It's something the IOC needs to remember when they meet the ICC or they run the risk of simply becoming a joke.

Either that or just open the cornhole and let the Olympic beer pong begin.
