He wasn't exaggerating, having sent out Mongolian Khan the previous weekend to land one of the great races on the Australian turf, the Caulfield Cup, and a few years earlier Its A Dundeel rampaged through two Sydney autumns.

Baker had to contend with the huge disappointment of Mongolian Khan having to be scratched from the Melbourne Cup after the galloper suffered an attack of colic, but on Saturday he regained some decent compensation.

Baker had a twinkle in his eye, and why wouldn't he.

He had, after all, just saddled up the the consistent and brave Turn Me Loose to make all the running in the group 1 Emirates Stakes, one of the two big features on the final day of Flemington's history-making Cup carnival.

In the process the front-running son of Iffraaj gave jockey Kerrin McEvoy his 50th group 1 winner, almost 15 years to the day that he rode his first - Brew, for another Kiwi (although Melbourne-based) trainer in Mike Moroney in the 2000 Melbourne Cup.

It was a glorious day all round for the New Zealanders as another expatriate, Chris Waller, plundered the other big event, the group 1 Darley Classic, with Delectation. Needless to say he was partnered by leading Kiwi jockey James McDonald, a young rider who is regarded as one of the rising stars on the global racing scene.

Modest Baker summed up Turn Me Loose perfectly: "He's a good tough horse who can run those sectionals and make it hard for horses behind him." Turn Me Loose wears his heart on his sleeve, as all front runners do, and is always there to be shot at. It is a wonderful testimony to Baker's training skills and horsemanship that his four-year-old has now won three races on the spin in the course of a month in Australia, picking up about $1 million in prizemoney for his troubles.

Baker generally just comes across the ditch during the carnivals in Sydney and Melbourne.

Waller is now a permanent feature, bestriding the Sydney, and increasingly the Australian, racing scene like a colossus.

In the past two weekends there have been two big group 1 sprints, and both have produced enormous boilovers: Waller is the common denominator.

If punters still needed any lessons about him, then surely even the most dull witted would have realised the master trainer's runners can never be ignored.

Anyone venturing into a TAB or firing up an online betting account should be made to recite the mantra.

Computers should be fitted with something similar to those driving disabler devices that prevent drunks from getting behind the wheel, with those who do not include a Waller runner in a big race simply prevented from putting on their bet.

It's surprising that the wealth creation industry has not actually lobbied for such legislation, so often does he end up turning the form book on its head and winning big races with long shots - often at the expense of the favourite, some of which he himself saddles.

That wasn't the case on Derby Day, when his outsider Japonisme found the fast lane on the rail and burst the Exosphere bubble in the group 1 Coolmore.

And neither was it the case on Saturday when Delectation, another Waller longshot - he started at $14 - upset the applecart and spoiled the party for Chautauqua, the odds-on favourite who was expected to turn the Darley Classic into a procession.

But on the rather softer surface, and on the outside of the nine-horse field he could not quite nail the fast-finishing Delectation, who triumphed by a short head.

Both these Kiwi-connected winners could now become globetrotters.

Turn Me Loose has an engagement in Hong Kong, where the lucrative prizemoney on International Race Day could prove tempting in the mile race should Baker opt to continue on rather than rest him for Sydney next year, where the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes or the Doncaster Mile could be a target.

Delectation, says Waller, is really a 1400-metre to 1600-metre horse who gets too stirred up going round bends, which is why he loves the Flemington "straight six", the 1200m distance of the Darley.

"We had some great sprinters in today's field, but I think he won fair and square. He came from behind and beat them with the same weight," said Waller.

"We will find another 1200m race up the straight, it doesn't really matter what country it is in." Would Royal Ascot be on the horizon?

"I would say so, there is good prizemoney in Australia, so we won't lose sight of that, but you have to do something in winter time," Waller grinned.
