Michael Wells picked Lake Burley Griffin over Brazilian beaches and the ACT Brumbies recruit says he made the right decision to sacrifice an Olympic Games dream to take a shot at Super Rugby.

Wells will arrive in Canberra in the coming days to start his Brumbies career after helping the Australian sevens team book its ticket to the Olympics in Rio at a tournament in Auckland last weekend.

The 22-year-old flanker jumped at the chance to sign an extended player squad contract in Canberra, even if it meant sacrificing an opportunity to become an Olympian.

Hooker Robbie Abel will join Wells on an EPS deal, with the Brumbies set to announce Abel's contract on Tuesday morning after his impressive efforts for the Canberra Vikings in the National Rugby Championship.

For Wells, the brutal pre-season training grind with the Brumbies will be a massive shift from the elation of securing a spot at the Rio Olympics, but he's prepared for his fresh start.

"It is a bit bittersweet I guess, I'll let the sevens win sink in but come [later this week] I'll focus on starting the year with the Brumbies," Wells said.

"When I signed the contract and chose Super Rugby over sevens, it was more of a long-term decision. [The 15-a-side game] is where I saw myself at and I was just grateful that the Brumbies gave me an opportunity."

The Australian side blitzed its opponents at the Oceania qualifying event in New Zealand, cruising to victory and securing a place in rugby sevens' Olympic debut.

It was a magic moment for the players, who included Canberra juniors Tom Cusack and Lewis Holland as well as a host of stars who have played in the capital's first-grade competition.

Despite the enormity of going to Rio next year and being part of an opening ceremony and living in the athletes' village, Wells was already thinking about moving to Canberra.

The former Australian under-20s back-rower wants to use his time at the Brumbies to learn off Wallabies superstar David Pocock.

However, he's not completely lost to the sevens Olympic bid. If he isn't picked in the Brumbies' Super Rugby team and the sevens come calling for his services, Wells is open to returning to the shorter-version of the game.

"But it would have to be up to the Brumbies and sevens. If both parties were happy, I'd be happy to do whatever suits both," Wells said.

"The first focus is to just get in for pre-season training. I have only been playing sevens for a year and the Olympics was a big target. I never looked too far at the Olympics though, there was too much before it so there was no point getting carried away.

"I'm really excited to work with [Pocock and Scott Fardy], hopefully I'll learn quickly and be able to push them for some spots. I'll be trying to pick their brains as much as possible."

The majority of the Brumbies squad will arrive at the club's headquarters on Friday for medical assessments before training begins next week.

Wallabies representatives will be given until January 4 to return to training while quartet Stephen Moore, Fardy, Joseph Tomane and Tevita Kuridrani will play for the Barbarians against Gloucester and Argentina in England this week.
