No.10 Pick

Patrick Dangerfield – Adelaide, 2007,154 games

The shortlist: Simon Prestigiacomo (Collingwood, 1995, 233 games), Nathan Brown (Western Bulldogs, 1996, 219 games), Luke McPharlin (Hawthorn, 1999, 256 games)

It seems like this should have been a shoe-in for Dangerfield, but it's easy to forget how good Nathan Brown, a two-time All-Australian was. And McPharlin has been one of the Dockers best ever. "Presti" was a favourite among Pies supporters and a nuisance among key forwards, never giving an inch. But Dangerfield is a three-time All-Australian, and best-and-fairest winning superstar. Blake Caracella, Shane O'Bree, Phil Davis were a few who didn't make the short-list.

No.9 Pick

Martin Pike – Melbourne, 1992, 247 games

The shortlist: Chad Cornes (Port Adelaide, 1997, 255 games), Mark McVeigh (Essendon, 1998, 232 games), Jack Ziebell (North Melbourne, 2008, 124 games)

A controversial choice perhaps, but Pike was not just a four-time premiership player who went along for the ride. He was a gun, helping North lift the Cup in 1999 and then Brisbane in 2001-02 and 2003. Cornes got silver, the versatile key position player who finished third in the Brownlow Medal in 2004, a dual All-Australian and a former Port Adelaide vice-captain.

No.8 Pick

Jimmy Bartel – Geelong, 2001, 272 games

The shortlist: Chris Tarrant (Collingwood, 1997, 268 games), Jude Bolton (Sydney, 1998, 325 games), Joel Corey (Geelong, 1999, 276 games)

How we'll have the Cats done out of this pick? Bartel went ahead of Corey for his achievements were higher - Brownlow and Norm Smith Medal etc - but Geelong fans will tell you that Corey was just as dependable, and two best and fairests are testament to that. Bolton must rank as one of the best "two-way" midfielders of the modern era, given he is second all time for tackles. Daniel Harford (1994), Ben Reid (2006), Lachie Henderson (2007), Ty Vickery (2008) and Dyson Heppell (2010) were all on the "long" list.

No.7 Pick

Joel Selwood – Geelong, 2006, 204 games

The shortlist: Leon Cameron (Western Bulldogs, 1988, 256 games), Chris Johnson (Fitzroy, 1993, 264 games), Jordan Lewis (Hawthorn, 2004, 240 games)

There are some premierships in this group. Between Lewis, Selwood and Johnson, there are 10 in total. Cameron is the odd one out in that respect, but not on talent. He was a supremely skilful player. On top of this three flags, former skipper Johnson was a two-time All-Australian, while Lewis has won four flags (and counting), one an All-Australian jumper and a best and fairest. Selwood however, can carry a team like the others can't (or haven't had to). He has been voted the Player of the Year once by the AFLPA, best captain once and "most courageous player" four times – not too mention all his best and fairest and All-Australian honours.

No.6 Pick

Chad Wingard – Port Adelaide, 2011, 89 games

The shortlist: Allen Jakovich (Melbourne, 1990, 54 games), Chris Yarran (Carlton, 2008, 119 games), Jack Macrae (Western Bulldogs, 2012, 55 games)

By the end of his career Wingard's playing record could rank beside any the other player on this list. But the fact he is already the best No.6 of the last 30 years is surprising. Jakovich was a close second – given he averaged close to four goals a game over 54 matches. Even a generous "hit or miss" analysis of the No.6s would have at least 16 misses, making it easily the less profitable top 10 pick. Gold Coast, who has the selection this, is hoping the curse does not continue.
