Eight years ago, 20-year-old Matthew Leveson disappeared after being last seen leaving the ARQ nightclub in Darlinghurst with his older boyfriend Michael Peter Atkins.

In 2009, Mr Atkins was acquitted of his dead partner's murder and manslaughter by a jury after pleading not guilty.

Parts of Mr Atkins' 2007 interview with police, in which he was asked about buying a mattock and tape in the hours following his boyfriend's disappearance, were withheld from the jury but have now been revealed.

A transcript of the interview, seen by Fairfax Media, details how police told Mr Atkins they had CCTV footage of a man – fitting Mr Atkins' description – seen at Bunnings Warehouse at Taren Point on Sunday, September 23, 2007.

A receipt from that store for the purchase of a mattock and gaffer tape, made nine hours after Matt was last seen alive, were later found in the boot of Matt's abandoned car.

"It is our belief that about 12.20 on Sunday afternoon that you went to Bunnings Warehouse and you were the person who purchased that pick and the gaffer tape," a detective asked Mr Atkins during an interview in 2007.

"Is there anything you wish to say about that?"

Mr Atkins, now 52, replied: "I don't think it was me".

Asked who he thought the person, who wore clothes similar to what Mr Atkins told police he was in that same day, could have been, Mr Atkins replied: "I don't know".

He later told police that on Sunday, including when the Bunnings purchase was made, he was in bed with Matt.

They woke later that afternoon about 2pm or 3pm, Mr Atkins confirmed.

"Yeah ... we sort of just had, you know, lazy Sunday afternoon really," he told detectives.

The footage from Bunnings Warehouse was showed to the jury in Mr Atkins' trial before the panel found him not guilty.

The Bunnings receipt was found in the back of Matt's car, which was abandoned at a known gay beat in Sutherland after his disappearance.

The speaker in the boot had been ripped out and it was later found in Matt's garage at his Cronulla home, Mr Atkins trial had heard.

Mr Atkins' trial in 2009 also heard he sent messages to his younger lover's phone the day after he disappeared, asking where he was.

However, it was alleged by the crown that Mr Atkins had the phone the whole time. Police found Matt's phone in Mr Atkins' car during a search of his home.

Mr Atkins' lawyer reiterated in a statement that Mr Atkins had been tried and acquitted of murder and manslaughter in the NSW Supreme Court.

"Mr Atkins has been subpoenaed to attend the coronial inquest due to recommence in a matter of weeks and will not be commenting publicly in the meantime," the statement to Fairfax Media read.

NSW Deputy State Coroner Elaine Truscott will oversee an inquest into Matt's death from December 7.

For the past eight years, Matt's parents, Mark and Faye Leveson, have fought for justice for their son's murder.

This includes going to the Royal National Park under a full moon and light cloud cover to look for their murdered son's body.

Mr Leveson believes it was under those conditions that the killer disposed of his son's body.

Based on the odometer in Matthew's car, the pair have calculated a search radius, which has sent them looking through bushland and various roadside locations for Matt's remains.

Mrs Leveson said the couple drove during the night "to see what we could see and picked out places".

"The whole time we are looking at the side of the road, not enjoying the trip, and thinking could a car have gotten in there, was that gate locked?

"Most families go out to the bush for picnics, we go looking for bones."

Ms Leveson said the one thing she wants is to bring Matty home.

"We want to know how, why and when and to be able to locate his body, that's a win for us," she said.

"If we bring him home, hopefully justice will follow. Nobody was given the chance  to say goodbye to Matty.

"We don't even know if he suffered, how terrified he was."

The last known contact Matthew made was a text to a friend at 3.30am on the day he went missing. It said "He needs to f___en get over himself."

A $100,000 reward is on offer for any information that will allow Mr and Ms Leveson to finally lay their son to rest – the location of Matthew's body.
