Numerous reports of a caller claiming to be from the Australian Tax Office demanding an immediate payment have been relayed to local tax agents, Young Police and The Witness office.
The caller usually claims that there is a debt owed to the Australian Tax Office (ATO).
As a result, they further claim a warrant has been issued for the resident’s arrest and a payment of funds is required in the next 12 hours to prevent further action.
Amounts of between $4000 and $20,000 have been demanded and the callers seem to be targeting older people.
Police are urging anyone who received similar suspicious phone calls demanding money to not provide any details, get the number of the caller and contact their accountant or the ATO directly on 13 28 61.
The NSW Police has urged anyone with information about the phone scam to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via nsw.crimestoppers.com.au
The calls can also be registered with Young Police on 6382 8199.
