It was a throwaway line by Rod Marsh but the fact that he said it at all reveals the growing status Peter Nevill holds in the Australian team.

"We hope that he can make more Test hundreds than any other Australian wicketkeeper. How does that sound? That would be a good solution for Australia's batting."

Nevill is yet to make a Test ton, irrespective of Marsh's unorthodox criterion for weighting batting performances on an uncharacteristically lively Adelaide pitch, so he has a long way to go to match Adam Gilchrist.

But he may yet fill a role that the peerless Gilchrist was seldom asked to play - batting at No.6, in place of all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.

Coach Darren Lehmann, also a selector, again floated the prospect of a reshuffle on Sunday after Nevill's match-turning innings in Adelaide and Marsh's continued struggles with the bat.

The decision, as Marsh tersely pointed out on Tuesday, will be up to captain Steve Smith, who sets the batting order, but the chairman of selectors, a former wicketkeeper himself, is greatly impressed by Nevill.

No player made more than Nevill's first innings knock of 66, made under extreme pressure in difficult conditions. He was also exemplary with the gloves, pouching six chances and a stumping.

"He had a terrific game, a fantastic game," Marsh said.

"The way I looked at this Test match was normally on Adelaide Oval 400 is a half-decent first-innings score.

"It was 200 both sides, so I just doubled everyone's score ... and looked at it that way. I thought that was a fair way of doing it - so Nevill's 132 was brilliant.

"His Shield record would suggest that he can bat. He took a little while to find his feet at Test level against the moving ball under trying conditions in England, but the thing that we all liked about him was the fact that ... the opposition had to get him out. It's a good trait in a batsman, that."

Marsh made just four in Australia's first-innings collapse but his 28, or 56 under the selector' double-up theory, was vital in the run chase.

"When you look at it that way [it is decent] - and that's the way we had to look at it, really," Marsh said.

But there was no special dispensation given to West Australian opener Cam Bancroft, who is averaging 27 this summer after being close to Test selection at the start of the New Zealand series.

"I'll leave that for you to decide whether you think his form is good enough to be selected in this side," Marsh said.
