The move to a bigger and better site - the former Go Lo building - has also enticed the St Vincent de Paul Society to make Young the flagship store in the Canberra/Goulburn region.

The premises - chosen because of its size, space and proximity - will enable the charity to provide four times more items than what they’re currently providing.

It will bring three locations that Young Vinnies at the moment operate out of under the one roof.

“We will be able to store furniture on site because at the moment it’s at a different premises,” said store manager Bronwen Grovenor, who was handed the keys on January 12.

“We’ll have a conference room where we can continue to provide assistance to people in need.

“We have three locations at the moment, our hands are tied, [but] we’re going to be a one-stop shop.”

The new premises will make it more convenient and will further aid and serve, not just people in Young but in the district, giving them a broader focus.

While work still needs to be done to the premises and a moving date not yet set, Bronwen said she and her volunteers were ready for the transition now.

“If it was up to us girls we’d be with our trolleys, brakes off and down the street,” she laughed.

And there’s already been talk among the volunteers about how they’ll be getting about now that they’ll have more floor space to cover, with bicycles, roller skates and hover boards comically suggested as their preferred options.

“It’s all very exciting, we’re going to have to get fitter,” Bronwen said.

“This is going to be like a walk in the park compared to what we’re used to.”

With the big move ahead will come the need for more hands on deck, with Bronwen putting out the call to anyone who’d like to get involved.

“We have Young High School and Hennessy Catholic College kids helping out, university students as well. Volunteers can be 12 years and onwards,” Bronwen said.

“We have a really good reputation for not turning people away, we’re working longer hours and we’re flexible.

“As long as we’re open we’re here to help.”

Member for Cootamundra Katrina Hodgkinson was in town the following day, where she visited Vinnies in Lynch Street to drop off nine bags of clothes.

She also wanted to take the opportunity to congratulate the volunteers on the delivery of their keys.

“It’ll be absolutely fantastic when the volunteers move,” Katrina said.

“Well done and good luck with the big move.”
