Jay Weatherill cultivates a quietly spoken, calmly reasonable air. But don't be fooled. Those who know the South Australian premier of old know the steel that lurks beneath that imperturbable surface. As Labor Senate leader Penny Wong, his former girlfriend from Young Labor days in Adelaide, puts it: "His instinct is to build consensus and he's slow to anger; but he is a very determined man,  and he will hold to what he thinks is right in the face of opposition or barbs."
