Mother-of-one Skye Edwards, 25, lost her father just nine months ago from his very short battle with this horrible disease.
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting.
MND can affect people’s ability to walk, talk, swallow, eat, drink and breathe.
Because it was hereditary in her family, just after her father died from his short battle, Skye followed up with a specialist to see if she too had the MND gene.
A positive result meant Skye was faced with the 50/50 chance of getting the disease.
But the news got worse. Days later she got the heartbreaking news she had developed MND and now faces day-to-day life knowing things are only going to get worse.
Since watching her father slowly slip away from her and his passing Skye has been the rock for her large family of eight brothers and sisters, her mother and step-mother.
According to friends she has never slowed down to take care of herself.
She and her partner are parents to a 16 month old daughter named Harpa.
Being in Young, all medical help for Skye is at least a four hour drive away, and with ongoing medical costs, living costs and the daily struggle she now faces, things are becoming just too hard.
So her friends and family are reaching out to spread the word, raising awareness of Skye’s plight and seek ways help fund her medical and living costs.
