The NSW government will consider strengthening assisted reproduction laws after a Sydney woman allegedly misled a fertility clinic about her pregnancy to avoid contact with her child's genetic parents.

Fairfax Media revealed on Sunday that a leading fertility clinic, IVF Australia, was investigating allegations the woman claimed her pregnancy had failed in an apparent attempt to side-step an agreement to allow the couple who donated an embryo to keep in touch with the child.

Health Minister Jillian Skinner said the government had passed laws in March "to strengthen provisions surrounding donor conception".

"A case made public [on Sunday] raises issues which the NSW Ministry of Health will look into to determine if any further strengthening is required," Ms Skinner said.

Natalie Parker and her husband, who donated an embryo to the woman, only discovered the woman had given birth to a son after Ms Parker tracked her down on Facebook. The profile was deleted a day later.

The boy, who appeared to have been born nine months after the embryo arrived at the clinic in Sydney, looked "strikingly" like the Parkers' three-year-old son Hugo, Ms Parker told the Sun-Herald.

Sandra Dill, the chief executive of infertility support group Access Australia, said it would be "very unwise" not to tell a child about their genetic parents if they were donor-conceived.

DNA testing made it "risky" try to hide a child's identity and "things have a really bad way of coming out at the worst possible time".

"All that will do is alienate the child," Ms Dill said.

Under NSW laws applying from January 1, 2010, fertility clinics such as IVF Australia are under a mandatory obligation to collect identifying information about donors. The information is placed in a central electronic database and can be accessed by donor-conceived people when they turn 18.

Donor recipients can be fined up to $11,000 if they give false or misleading information to the clinic.

But the law goes further in Victoria, and requires an addendum to be added to the birth certificates of donor-conceived children. This alerts people over 18 who are applying for their birth certificate that more information is available about their entry. It is not given to any other person.

Caroline Lorbach​, a spokeswoman for the Donor Conception Support Group of Australia, said the case highlighted the need for NSW to follow Victoria's lead.

Putting an addendum on birth certificates meant there was "much less chance of it ever being hidden".

"I think because something is in legislation, people start thinking more about how important it must be. If we don't have legislation people think it's obviously not that important," Ms Lorbach said.

She said fertility clinics had been given too much say over government policy when they had "a huge vested interest".

Ms Dill from Access Australia said embryo donation was "incredibly rare" and "most people who have embryos don't want to donate them" because any child born would be the full sibling of existing children.

In such cases, couples often wanted "to be involved in the child's life".

But Ms Dill said "all these things will have been very thoroughly investigated by the clinic counsellor at the time. They [the clinic] are the people to really go to to sort this through."
