A kids playground in the new $282 million facility has been ruled off limits because of a fencing issue which allows children to climb over the side.
Local mother Lisa Restall, whose son was admitted into the new children’s ward, believes the lack of activities on offer for kids is “appalling”.
She said it is “unbelievable” that a facility with so much funding is unable to fix a playground fence to give kids some enjoyment.
“What a joke (it is), all that money, but they can not utilise a playground because there’s a fence surrounding it which was designed for pooling,” she said.
“They’re not allowed to bring game consoles from old hospital to new hospital in case of germs which is a joke.”
The children’s leisure centre, developed as part of the new multi-million dollar complex, is being worked on so it can be opened as soon as possible.
“Work is being arranged to extend a fence to complete the paediatric outdoor play area at Wagga Wagga Rural Referral Hospital,” general manager of Wagga Wagga Health Service Denis Thomas said.
“In light of concerns children may be able to climb or jump from other structures in the play area onto the fence, the Local Health District has decided it is appropriate to extend the fence to improve safety.
“The play area will be opened as soon as possible.”
The three year construction of the building saw patients moved into the new hospital in January 2016.
