Police have released an image of Stephen Boyd, who is wanted for questioning in relation to the alleged bashing death of his partner Tina Kontozis in Bundeena on Sunday afternoon.

In a renewed call for public information, police said Mr Boyd was believed to be driving a silver 2002 model Holden Commodore sedan with NSW registration plates BZ 53 ZO.

Detective Chief Inspector Terry O'Neill, the Sutherland Local Area Command Crime Manager, said Mr Boyd was known to police, but would not comment on whether there was a history of domestic violence in the relationship.

Police have scoured bushland in the Royal National Park from the air and set up checkpoints in the park to try to intercept Mr Boyd but he and his car have not been found.

"We have concerns with his welfare and we would like him to reach out to the NSW Police," Detective Chief Inspector O'Neill said.

"We have made a number of visits to friends and acquaintances of Mr Boyd in an attempt to establish where he is."

He warned members of the public not to approach Mr Boyd or his car. "If you see the vehicle or Mr Boyd ... contact Triple 0 and police will respond and will do the approach."

Police were called to the home in Beachcomber Avenue, Bundeena, about 3.30pm after neighbours heard people fighting and someone screaming.

It is believed a man armed with a cricket bat bashed Ms Kontozis, 51, to death.

A 17-year-old boy injured in the attack sought refuge with a neighbour and is in a satisfactory condition in hospital. It's understood he suffered injuries to his arms trying to protect Ms Kontozis.

A crime scene was established at the home, which was examined by detectives and forensic specialists.

Ms Kontozis worked at the local day care centre Goanna Patch Kindergarten. She wrote a book about Bundeena called Shelly and the Rescue Warriors.

The picturesque village of Bundeena is surrounded by the Royal National Park and is home to about 2000 people.

While there is only one road in and out of the village, police are concerned the alleged offender could escape on foot via the National Park or Bonnie Vale, the largest camp ground in the Park.

Ms Kontozis's home remained cordoned off by police tape on Monday as police forensic officers examined the scene and collected evidence in brown paper bags.

By the tape was a collection of flowers left by those affected by her death. "RIP Tina, a beautiful flower cut down too soon", one card read.

Family and friends expressed their sadness and disbelief on Facebook.

Fiona Schneider​ wrote: "A beautiful women taken from the world to (sic) early. You deserved so much better. We will never forget u XX".

Debra Smith wrote: "We are so sorry to hear this. This lady was salt of the earth."
