Second Grade kicked off the excitement against Uni North Owls with a tightly contested first half where the lead changed multiple times.
An inspirational half-time talk by Tom Wills saw the Yabbies dominate the second half to win 31-22.
Yabbies’ forwards Tom Kent, Hamish Kaveny and Jack Everdell played well, while Riley Turner and Pete Maher really turned it on for the backs.
In another close contest for First Grade, Connor McGregor opened the scoring after Mick Stallard Broke the Owls’ defence.
Mick Stallard soon crossed for his own try only for the referee to call held-up.
The Owls put points on the board with a converted try, a penalty goal and an unconverted try.
Jeshua Smith finished off the half scoring left of the uprights.
Jesh is leading try scorer for the Yabbies, having scored four tries in five games.
Five points down at halftime the Yabbies came out strong, testing the Owls’ defence multiple times, although unable to break through.
Again discipline was lacking for the Yabbies.
After a yellow card and a penalty the Owls increased their lead to 10-18.
Late in the second half Irish import James Martin went over for the Yabbies. Even though the try was converted it was too little too late.
Paying at number 8 Calum McCaffery was best on ground for the Yabbies, with brothers Hagon and Zac Williams playing extremely well.
Next week the Yabbies Take on ADFA in Canberra.
