With the unfortunate abandonment of the Boorowa Picnics last week and the big two-day Wagga carnival almost upon us, the interest has certainly been aroused among racing followers throughout southern NSW.
Young Turf Club has been fortunate once again to secure the support of numerous local business's with last year’s major sponsors, Young Hotel and South West Slopes Credit Union providing the major end of the purse in the feature race, a benchmark 67 handicap to be run over 1600 metres.
Last year’s winner, Zarreig, trained by Leeton mentor Peter Clancy appears to be on the road again for another crack at the cup with his seven-year-old Zariz gelding resuming at Wagga on April 26 following a couple of lengthy spells where he finished sixth.
Zarreig was sent to the spelling paddock after last year’s win and resumed at Forbes on August 3 but with only two starts under his belt was again sent to the spelling paddock for a 19-week break.
His only win since taking out the 2015 Young Cup was at Albury on February 19, bringing his tally to 10 wins from 44 starts and a total prizemoney purse of $99,900 as of May 1.
Both Peter Clancy and Kerry Weir are great supporters of the cup meetings.
Kerry has won previously and last year was ¾ length from the winner Zarreig with Easiestgameonearth with Opoho third for Queanbeyan trainer Jenny Hoy.
Patrons attending the cup meeting to be held at the famous Toompang Racecourse will once again be provided with a free courtesy bus provided by Loaders Coaches of Grenfell leaving the Young Hotel at 11.30am and returning after the final race.
All ladies will be admitted free and be in the running for The Loft $100 voucher for best lady, while the gentlemen will receive $100 voucher from Bruce's Mensland for best dressed gentleman.
As an extra incentive to encourage a big weekend of entertainment, the Young Turf Club will conduct a pre race day dinner in conjunction with Elevation Restaurant on Friday night commencing at 6.30pm.
Special guest speaker for the evening will be popular Alice Springs, Pioneer Park race caller Shane Green who is renowned for his colourful calls.
Seating is limited to 50 patrons with a three course dinner provided at a cost of $55 per person.
Bookings can be made by calling 6382 7144.
Membership is now invited at a cost of only $22 (inc GST) per person and included two tickets plus two race books and two drink vouchers which represents great value.
