But those goals were blown out of the park when the 16-year-old and his team took out every event they entered.
The Australian Open Oceania representative team came up against nine other countries during the championships held in Auckland over April 18 to 24.
For Burt - one of the youngest competitors - it was the first time competing at an international level.
Inexperience didn’t hold the teenager back. He went on to win the individual open gold in 100 Target Double Barrel with 205/206, individual open silver in Single Barrel with 97/100, and individual junior silver in pointscore with 295/300.
This resulted in Burt taking out the third overall highest score from the entire event with 491/500, to earn himself the open division individual bronze high gun title.
His team also won overall gold in the three-man open team.
“I went there with the intention of just being happy with any result,” he said.
“The fact I was even representing Australia was big enough.
“To not only get a junior overall position, but to take out an open position was an impressive achievement.
“We (the team) were happy to just get a placing but all shot higher than our standard to bring every event home for Australia.
“It was a great start for international travelling for me,” Burt said.
His next major event will be the state carnival in Wagga where the best clay target shooters from all over NSW compete for team placing for nationals in 2017.
“My goal will be to at least make a position in the junior side, but I’m hoping to make an open level achievement,” he said.
