The women had their first win of the season last week against Cowra and will go into tomorrow confident of producing another impressive effort.
The Saintees played some good, free flowing and expansive football with a number of girls showing fast development in the new sport to town.
It’s also pleasing to see that family lines are increasing within our club through the Silk, Poulton and Perceval girls, so it’s not just fathers and sons, or the brothers and cousins.
The family club goal is coming into fruition.
From fullback to full forward, the girls outplayed the Cowra side.
Co-captain Jess Garness putting in a powerful performance, closely followed by Emily Poulton and Taylor Callaghan who are becoming important commodities to the side.
The CTR Trophies and Engraving Best on Ground went to Caitlin Shaw who had a fine game chipping in with two goals on the day.
QT - Young 1-6-12, Cowra 0-0-0.
HT - Young 2-6-18, Cowra 1-1-7.
QT - Young 2-7-19, Cowra 1-1-7.
FT - Young 5-8-38, Cowra 1-3-9.
Goal kickers - two each to Caitlin Shaw and Jess Garness, and one goal to Emily Poulton.
The Under 18s came up against an undermanned but doggedly determined Cowra Blues side who pushed the Saints totally to the limit.
The boys were warned through last week at training that no matter what sort of side Cowra would field they would come for a win, and they nearly got it. According to coach Geoff Harmer, if not for at least four players missing the Blues would have come close to taking the four competition points.
“They pressured us into mistakes and subsequently our discipline went out the window and in the bin for 15 minutes,” he said.
“There’s a lot the boys have to do before the Giants games next week.”
In a tough game it was a first season player who did all the little things right and played to the game plan, impressing coaching staff and officials with his effort.
This is what gained Kye Hutchinson the CTR Trophies and Engraving Best on Ground award.
Max DeBritt is growing in confidence and continues to impress and improve, as are Brandon Sanderson and Conah WIlder who are fast becoming useful utility players.
A special mention to Brodie Harmer-Clark and Kai O’Rourke who helped Cowra by playing the whole game for the Blues.
Taking nothing away from the Cowra lads, but these two really tested their Young teammates and provided good opposition.
QT - Young 3-3-21, Cowra 2-1-13.
HT - Young 6-3-38, Cowra 6-7-43.
QT - Young 11-3-69, Cowra 8-7-55.
FT - Young 15-4-94, Cowra 10-8-68.
The First Grade side again found the middle quarters of the match awkward and draining but put in their best performance of the season, especially in the first and last terms, but the Blues’ midfield had too much experience and ran in their legs for the Saints and ran out comfortable winners.
“As with every game this year so far, Young had a few players missing who would have, I’m not saying won us a game, but kept us closer,” Harmer said.
“It’ll be a good day I think when we can field a complete side, but take nothing away from the new guys putting in each week both at training and out on the paddock on game day.
“They can all hold their heads high.”
After missing last week captain Cameron ‘Sid’ Hobbs was an inspiration on ball and his work rate both forward and back was awesome, thus being named the Stewarts Jewellers Players Player who was closely followed by Issac ‘Jacko’ James and Tyrone Thompson.
Jarrod Pope looked a lot more comfortable back in the backline, as did Jason Loader and Ron Roe Snr who helped them battle four quarters up back.
Phil Baumhammer and Daniel Cousley did some good things up front and were both awarded with major scores.
QT - Young 2-1-13, Cowra 4-8-32.
HT - Young 3-1-19, Cowra 11-13-79.
QT - Young 3-1-19, Cowra 17-19-121.
FT - Young 4-3-27, Cowra 24-21-165.
Goalkickers - one goal each to P Baumhammer, C Hobbs, D Cousley and T Thompson.
Just a quick note - the two games tomorrow have been swapped around, so First Grade play at 12.45pm and the women at 2.30pm.
The canteen is in operation and the Under 14 Saints are due to play on Sunday out at Burrangong from 11am.
