The First and Reserve Grade Yabbies will take on the Goulburn Reds who are predicted to put up a tough contest in both grades.
According to clubperson Rowan Daley the Yabbies are looking to put in a free flowing performance.
“We’ll look to get ball in hand and have the backs work together - I know they’ve been working on some moves that should produce exciting rugby,” Daley said.
“The forwards will look to have a strong game themselves following Jesh Smith’s example and hopefully build structure and create space for the backs.”
The Under 18 Yabbies will also play in front of a home crowd on Saturday when they take on the Vikings.
The return of Nick Stephens, Will Munday and Honre van Rensburg will add some extra starch to the Yabbies’ forward pack this week.
Their return is welcomed by the Yabbies pack after being defeated by Canberra Grammar School last week.
Now playing in probably the strongest schoolboy rugby competition outside Sydney, the Yabbies Under 18s are finding the standard particularly high and the going a little tough in the Canberra Division 1 competition.
The newly-promoted Yabbies travelled to Canberra Grammar School last Saturday following a first-round loss to Royals and were defeated 56-22.
School debutante balls disrupted team selections with regular players at half-back, hooker and prop all unavailable to travel.
The professional approach taken by Grammar First XV to prepare for the match was something we don’t often see in Young, but the Yabbies boys took the field determined. And take it to them they did, scoring a well-taken try close to the posts in the first 10 minutes.
From there though the Grammar machine kicked into gear and the superior size and organisation slowly wore the Yabbies down. However, despite a difficult period through the middle of the game where Grammar scored several times, the Yabbies continued to fight hard and were rewarded with three more tries and finished the match strongly.
Best on the day were Hayden Rutter, Sam Davis, Riley Turner and Brent Shoard.
This Under 18s will kick off tomorrow’s round at Hall Bros Oval at 12.15pm, followed by Reserve Grade at 1.30pm and First Grade to top off the day at 3pm.
