The regional network has signed a “long term agreement” with Channel Ten to broadcast its shows.

The deal comes after Channel Nine opted to pair up with Southern Cross last month.

WIN Network CEO Andrew Lancaster also said the commitment to local news remained strong.

“WIN’s commitment to local regional news continues,” Mr Lancaster said.

“It is something we are proud of and is at the heart of the WIN Network.

Bruce Gordon's Win Corporation has signed a five-year affiliate agreement to broadcast Ten Network's programming into its regional areas.

The deal, as foreshadowed by Fairfax Media, sees Ten become WIN's primary affiliate partner and will pick up a number of extra markets where Southern Cross either does not broadcast or has existing partnerships.

Sources said that up to $13 million in affiliation fees were paid to Nine Entertainment by WIN Corp last year from these markets. These include large regional areas in South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania, Mildura and Griffith.

It is understood that WIN will pay a lower affiliate fee than the 50 per cent Southern Cross will pay Nine, thanks in large part to the extra markets.

Mr Gordon is Ten's largest shareholder with 14.9 per cent. He also holds the same amount in Nine.

"As the largest and one of the longest-standing shareholders in Ten, I am absolutely delighted to formally partner with Ten in WIN Network's markets throughout regional Australia," Mr Gordon said.

"I am very confident in Ten's strategy and resulting audience growth and look forward to working with Ten's management and Board to continue to grow both businesses."

Ten chief executive Paul Anderson told Fairfax Media that after a period of negotiation that began following an exclusivity period with Southern Cross he was happy to reach an agreement with WIN.

"We have a very good relationship with WIN. Bruce is our largest shareholder and has been a long-stranding shareholder and publicly has stated his thoughts on our strategy and what we're doing and has been very supportive," Mr Anderson said.

"We're genuinely delighted and we think we've got a partner that's heavily invested in regional Australia and we think that relationship will be beneficial to both of us."

WIN chief executive Andrew Lancaster thanked Mr Anderson and Ten chair David Gordon for their approach to the new deal.

"There has been so much written about the future of news, both in regional and metropolitan areas. WIN's commitment to news is stronger than ever.  WIN produces 16 half hour news bulletins and an hour-long All Australia News bulletin each weeknight," Mr Lancaster said.

"No other network matches that. Combined with the talent, experience and resources in the TEN newsrooms across Australia, viewers will see comprehensive news coverage at local, state, national and international level."

In late April, Nine broke a near 30-year affiliation with WIN in favour of a five-year agreement with Southern Cross, as revealed by Fairfax Media. The current agreement runs out at the end of June.

Southern Cross will pay Nine 50 per cent of the advertising revenue it generates as a result of broadcasting Nine's signal to regional Queensland, southern NSW and regional Victoria. On Friday, Southern Cross signed a five-year affiliate deal with Ten for northern NSW – Nine already operates NBN in the region – at a higher fee than the current deal between the two, which expires at the end of June.

It comes as WIN prepares to appeal the court decision on its streaming case against Nine, based on a number of areas it believes the court erred, as revealed by Fairfax Media.

These include "failing to give the word 'broadcast' a sufficiently wide meaning and instead adopting a meaning which was unduly narrow" and "construing that clause in a manner which gave no real meaning to the word 'exclusive' which appears in that clause (2.1 of program supply agreement)."

The case was centred on the understanding of the world broadcast and whether live-streaming is included in that definition.
