Young had the home ground advantage over the winless Northern Riverina Nomads on Sunday as the teams contested Round 7 of the Football Wagga Wagga Competition.
Despite starting slow the Lions soon found the back of the net, a lead that was quickly taken from them when the Nomads equalised the score.
Before long Young switched on and according to McCaffery played some good football.
The Lions piled on a further three goals in first half to go into the break up 4-1.
The goals kept on coming for Young as they continued to push forward and create chances.
Young continued to lead for the rest of the half to record their first win of the season, 8-1.
“It was more of a relief than anything else that it’s finally happened, so hopefully we can build on it and take some confidence from it,” McCaffery said.
While it was a convincing first win for the Lions, McCaffery is keeping his head out of the clouds in saying there’s more work to be done in order to be strong contenders for the Pascoe Plate.
“We’ll be playing Pascoe Plate, but hopefully we’ll be in the top half of the qualification for that,” he said.
“One result’s good, but we’ve still got to put the rest of the results to together.
“If we can get another two or three on the trott I’ll be a bit more comfortable.”
Goals to Duncan Cameron (4), Nathan Hislop (1), Milo Dowling (2) and Hassan Abbas (1). Milo played well again, he played on the right wing.
The Lions will play South Wagga under lights this week in a 7pm match on Saturday night.
