There were tight contests over the weekend for the Young Yabbies as Second Grade went down by a point and First Grade a draw.

In First Grade the Yabbies came out strong, making good field position before winning a penalty 15 metres out where they opted for the line out.
This paid off with Tom Hamplett crashing over from the back of the maul and taking the first try of the game. The try was successful converted by Michael Stallard, 7-nil.
Goulburn then scored off a Yabby error with Stallard spilling the ball over Young’s try line.
Unsuccessful conversion, 7-5.
Next Goulburn scored off a poor kick chase. Jack Biggins attempted to make a try-saving tackle but came in too late which resulted in a shattered knee cap for the English import.
Due to the injury half time was called early 7-10 Goulburns way.
The Yabbies started first half with 14 men due to Biggins’ first half tackle earning him a yellow card due to dangerous play.
The Yabbies rallied and worked their way down into Goulburn’s half where they received a penalty 35 metres out.
Mick Stallard successfully kicked the penalty to even the score 10-10.
From the kick-off the Yabbies worked their way down the field resulting in a solid try from Tom Donnan to give Young a five-point lead.
Goulburn were next to score and missed the conversion, taking the score to a final 15-all result.
Zac Williams was best on ground for the Yabbies, with Calum McCaffery and Tom Kent also earning points, as well as Kent being awarded players player.
“No-one wants to see a draw, we’re going to come out hard against the top-of-the-table side next week which should make for some very entertaining rugby,” Mick Stallard said.
In Second Grade Matt Reid opened the scoring for Young after breaking the line easily to go over just right of the uprights. This was converted by Pete Maher, 7-nil.
Goulburn hit back quickly with two tries and a penalty to take the score to 7-15.
The Yabbies outfit regrouped to work the ball down field with an inside ball from James Maloney resulting in a try by Rowan Daley. The try was converted to take the score to 14-15.
Young’s Jock Patterson went over in the corner to see the Yabbies take the lead 19-15.
Goulburn took advantage of scrappy play by Young to score and run out winners in a painful 19-20 defeat.
Best on ground for the Yabbies was James Maloney, with Matt Reid and Pete Maher also receiving points.
Second Grade coach Tom Wills said Young must work on their discipline in order to advance.
“We need to have a look at our discipline, and train hard as a group,” he said. “With hard training sessions planned this week we’ll look to turn opportunity into points.”
