Warning: Spoilers for Game of Thrones season six, episode five - The Door - follow.

If there was an underlying theme for Game of Thrones' fifth episode,The Door, it was penises.

There was the absence of a penis, whether cut off or due to gender, issues for Varys, Theon Greyjoy and Yara Greyjoy, and an up-close guest appearance of a penis, squished around by its aghast owner in the search for warts.

There we were, poetically pondering Arya Stark having to watch a theatre recreation of her father's beheading and then, ping!

A fleshy todger, filling the screen so completely it took a moment to realise it was not an anaemic Dothraki warrior stretching after a bath.

Its owner was a bit player in the episode's cast but his gentleman's friend will be forever remembered as the show's plucky answer to criticism of its boob-heavy coverage.

But first Sansa. She caught up with Littlefinger, after receiving a message he was in Mole's Town, the tiny village south of Castle Black famous for its souvenir The Wall fridge magnets and Jon Snow tea towels.

There in a barn, with Brienne of Tarth staring furiously behind her, Sansa confronted Petyr Baelish, the man she believed had her best interests at heart when he gave her to the Bolton family to become the wife of the sadistic Ramsay Bolton.

We were spared the sight of a Ramsay unspeakable act this week but we heard about them. In steely and stirring words Sansa held Littlefinger and his actions to ransom.

First he grovelled.

"You have no idea how happy I am to see you unharmed," he said.

"Unharmed?" Sansa replied.

After asking why he was there, and his explanation that he had brought the Knights of the Vale to save her, she asked him if he knew what had happened with Ramsay.

"If you didn't know you're an idiot," she said, stressing that last word. "If you did know you're my enemy.

"Would you like to know about my wedding night?"

Littlefinger's smooth veneer is ruffled.

"He never hurt my face," Sansa says. "He needed my face, the face of Ned Stark's daughter.

"But the rest of me, he did what he liked with the rest of me, as long as I could still give him an heir."

It was chilling to hear but immensely satisfying to watch Sansa say this to Littlefinger, his demeanour growing ever more uneasy.

"What do you think he did?" she said.

After his evasive response about being unable to comprehend she repeats the question.

"I made a mistake," he says.

But Sansa is not done. After establishing Ramsay beat and cut her, she reasons that a man of Baelish's background is no ingenue in such matters. A lady, she says, is not supposed to talk about the other things Ramsay did but "I imagine brothel-keepers talk about them all the time."

Get out of my sight, she says. I want to protect you, he says.

"You freed me from monsters who murdered my family,"  Sansa says. "And you gave me to monsters who murdered my family."

It is an encounter with female strength and power that goes beyond this series, beyond fiction..

To Braavos and Arya is still having the living daylights whacked out of her by that not-so-chummy girl with a big stick and class issues in the House of Black and White. Arya is improving but not winning.

Jaqen H'ghar, his hair ever sultry, takes her for a casual chat and stroll through the Hall of Faces.

He gives her vial of liquid and a quest to bring death to an actress in a play.

This theatre production turns out to be a fairly terrible work about King Robert's death, and the beheading of Eddard Stark. Stark is portrayed as a bumbling moron, by the brilliant British comedian Kevin Eldon, and Arya watches his rendering of her father with growing disquiet amid a guffawing audience.

Then it's penis time, with the said todger's owner playing Joffrey in the play's cast.

When normal non-penis viewing is re-established, we're backstage with Arya watching her prey, another cast member played by Australian Essie Davis. Also hamming it up in a corner is Richard E. Grant as a witty seen-it-all luvvie.

The kingsmot of the Iron Islands begins with Yara Greyjoy making her decision to become queen known on a windy, probably rainy in a few minutes, clifftop.

When her brother, Theon, also steps forward her nerves are evident. But he, in what looks to be another tearful moment (when will he smile?) declares his backing for Yara.

​Euron Greyjoy pops up, says he wants to be king and, oh yeah, he did kill his brother, Balon, the king, he deserved it.

In what is clearly a very democratic ballot, Euron wins the right to be drowned in the sea by his younger brother Aeron "Damphair" Greyjoy. But he comes to, gets crowned with a fairly measly, but no doubt beautifully crafted, crown of bent sticks, and then notices his niece and nephew have nicked off with the cream of the fleet.

Come on everyone, he cries, clearly a few sultanas short of a fruitcake, let's chop down all the trees, build a 1000 ships and murder my young family members. And, after that, I'll marry Daenerys Targaryen cause I'm a catch.

Daenerys Targaryen, meanwhile, is surveying Vaes Dothrak from a clifftop and, happily it looks like the temple fire is out. She's also had time to plait her fire-proof hair, but not to find clothes that don't look like they have been charred in a pizza oven.

She, with Darrio watching, contemplates what is to be done about Ser Jorah. She says twice she banished him and twice he came back. And he saved her life.

He confesses his love, a sad, hopeless but heart-swellingly valiant, declaration.

Daario looks a little put-out but this is not about bedmates.

Ser Jorah shows Daenerys his arm. Shocked by the greyscale on his arm, and the realisation that there is possibly no cure, she commands him to find a way to heal himself and then come back.

"When I take the Seven Kingdoms I need you by my side," she says

Meanwhile Tyrion and Varys meet a new priestess in a red dress.

Kinvara, or to use her full title, "High Priestess of the Red Temple of Volantis, the Flame of Truth, the Light of Wisdom, and First Servant of the Lord of Light", (which must be hard at dinner parties), is summoned by Tyrion in the hope she can spread the word, via her network of priests, that Daenerys is doing a great job keeping the peace in Meereen.

She is, of course, deeply unruffled by the importance of Tyrion and smug as all get out. But she does believe that Daenerys is Azor Ahai, "the One Who Was Promised"

Kinvara may be annoying for readers of George R. R. Martin's books because she is a man in A Song of Ice and Fire and called Benerro. But making her woman opens up opportunities for a meeting, or indeed a battle, between her and Melisandre.

Varys is less than impressed by the likes of Kinvara but then she walks slowly toward him with a smile curling at her lips, empathising with him about that time the "sorcerer mutilated your parts and threw them in the fire".

Does he remember the name of the voice who spoke from the fire, she asks, spooking Varys acutely.

We will see if she also turns into an 500-year-old woman when she takes off her necklace of an evening and collapses into bed.

The climax of this episode was Bran and his warging independently of the Three-Eyed Raven. He travels to the frozen lands where the White Walkers leader grabs him on the arm.

Bran returns but the contact means the White Walkers can now find Bran. Soon the army of the dead are outside screeching like zombies. They rush up and inside the cave scrabbling down into the roots.

Bran, meanwhile, is warging at Winterfell and he connects with Hodor as the young stable boy. This triggers a complicated but extraordinarily terrifying piece of drama as Hodor tries to fend off the white walkers by keeping them behind a tunnel door.

As Bran is dragged away into the snow, Hodor hears the cry to "Hold the door", "Hold the door".

At Winterfell, in Bran's time-travelling, Hodor the young falls to the ground in a fit crying the same over and over again until the words mesh together and he is saying: "Hodor. Hodor. Hodor."

​It is not clear if Hodor dies at the scrabbling, savaging hands of the White Walkers but his fate looks bad. And it is hard to watch as a beloved character, a small one but a significant one nonetheless, appears to sacrifice his bighearted and loyal self to such a horrible end.
